2001 Chevy Venture is stuck in park

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

The van starts, but when I try to shift from park to drive it will not budge. Had a
problem before where the shift gear moved freely but we fixed that and now
this. I can't afford to take it to a shop to have it looked at. This is my only
means of transportation. Please help me figure this out.

Have you tried to put you key in the hole by the shifter and moving it that way

On the left side of the p there should be a place to put your key in to be able to shift it into gear

I don't know about 2001, but my Chev Venture 2005 you have to press hard on the brake, hold and then shift from Park to whatever gear you want. Works for me...

Can you please share what you did to fix the shifter moving freely? I have that problem now and looking for possible solutions. Thanks.

I have a 2004 Chevy Venture. It has been very difficult to get the gear shift to move from PARK into a gear. Push the brake, pull the gear shift towards me as usual, and have to really FORCE it to move. Well, today my son got in and it went from PARK to REVERSE then just DIED. The battery is still charged, all the lights etc, but the car would NOT restart. The GEAR SHIFT will NOT budge at all. Dash panel shows it is in 3 (as in PNRD321) But when we turn the key but not where it powers up, the GEAR SHIFT SLIDES FREELY between ALL GEARS but will NOT "CATCH" and CHANGE GEARS. Therefore the van will NOT start. A neighbor said it is the transmission. But I came across this post and some YOUTUBE vids that seem to suggest something about a cable. Can you expound on this answer for me?

I believe you may need to replace your linkage bushing for your shifter linkage. Your shifter linkage is not working. When it stopped working the vehicle was not in park and that would be why it will not start. You will need to buy the replacement shifter linkage Bushing kit.
