Intermitent idol problems.

Asked by JEEPMAN1978 Mar 18, 2013 at 07:55 PM about the 2001 Jeep Cherokee Sport 4-Door 4WD

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

I just bought a 2001 Jeep Cherokee with the 4.0 straight 6 engine and O/T. And some times when I start it, it will idol really low and some times die. Also when I come to a stop at a light or something, as soon as I stop the idol will drop down so low that my lights will dim because its not spinning my alternator fast enough, and will some times die. But as soon as I give it a little gas it runs just fine. And it only does it about 60% of the time I'm driving it.
Any ideas?

Try replacing the air filter and PVC valve. If that doesn't help, replace the spark plugs.

Also your EGR. TS is right, just adding to it. If the EGR is clogged or stuck that can possibly cause idle problems

there is a part called the idle air control sensor. super easy to fix. there is 2 torx screws holding it on. unplug battery, wait for a little bit, remove screws and iac. then you just spray it down with carb cleaner and reverse steps. go to jeepforum.com and search for iac. you can get more details
