Asked by Carmen May 14, 2019 at 03:44 PM about the 2000 Jeep Cherokee Sport 4-Door 4WD

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

I have a 2000 jeep cherokee 4.0 6
cyl.  Recently changed starter and
have a new battery. Sometimes it
doesn't want to start and
backfires. Do I have to drop the
fuel tank to replace fuel filter ?

sounds like a timing issue. to make sure its not the fuel system have a technician spray brake cleaner in the intake and see if it will keep running then you know you have an issue in the fuel system. or a safer way is to have a fuel pressure guage attach to the fuel rail and see if the pressure is steady before replacing filter or pump.
