Timing belt
Does the 2012 Subaru Impreza base model manual transmission have a timing
belt or timing chain? I have had two Subaru dealers give me two different
answers. Is this something I need to get replaced or not? thanks.

Does the engine have a plastic timing belt cover in front?

That engine has a timing chain. One of your Subaru Dealers had the right answer.
