Has anyone had an problems with the car not able to go over 80MPH?

Asked by Theresa Jul 15, 2015 at 02:59 PM about the 2012 Nissan Sentra 2.0 SL

Question type: General

I drove my car that I just purchase, 2012 Nissan Sentra out of town. About an hour away. Drove up just fine. But as I was coming back into town, I wanted to pass a car, so switched lanes, I pressed the gas pedal and it didn't want to go any faster, it felt like it was losing power, but it was still on. So I exited the freeway thinking maybe the floor mat got stuck under the pedal. So I removed the mat. Got back on the freeway and it did it again. So I decided just to drive a little slower than others. I took it to the dealership that I bought it from, they test drove the car and put it on the computer to see if any errors popped up, but they couldn't find anything wrong with it. The engine light didn't come on at all. Can anyone help me with this?

sounds like what they call>laying down< .first try to add a additive to your gas..like ZMAX....also check the fuel pressure for run mode...

Hi Kelly, you don't think it a governor? That was my first thought.Ok. You say you wanted to pass a car. But how fast were you going at the time? I fully understand that sometimes when passing, especially on a 2-lane road, and say a car/truck is in front of you doing 60 and to get around it safely, dawdling is more dangerous than getting up to 80+, and pass and be done with it. I frequent US 395 in Eastern Calif that the speed limit is 65, a two-lane (one each direction) and my little Corolla can and will pass a truck doing 55 and I stomp on it and get up to 85-90 mph. But for only as long as it takes to pass and get back to cruising at 68, where I set my cruise control. But I normally do that. 68. Your Nissan has a bigger engine than my Corolla, Theresa and really should go faster than 80.... but back to my inquiry: How fast were you going to try to accelerate from?

@tennisshoes, was not looking at my RPM's so not sure what it said. @FordNut, I was going the speed limit which was 75MPH, so passing a car that was going slower than that, so tried to go about 80 to pass and resume at 75, but it wouldn't let me.

Hmmm....that blows my thoughts out of the water. I was thinking you were already doing 80 or more Theresa and didn't get the response you expected. I defer to those guys, they know more than I do anyway

@ FordNut, I am thinking of taking it again on a shorter test drive on the freeway to see if it does it again. Some people say it can be the fuel throttle sensor or the fuel injectors, who knows. Or just maybe it could have been a small air bubble in the gas line, I don't know!

Theresa, I'm sorry to hear all this. Where did you purchase your car? You know, unless you purchased the car "as is" with no warranty, there's usually a period of time, 1 year, 12 months or at the least 90 days and three months for a car. I would definitely recommend getting a second opinion from a Nissan or independent garage on what's wrong and assuming you didn't purchase this "as is", you might have some recourse. Could be something as simple as a fuel filter. Who knows? But, the people that sold you this car should have been more helpful, don't you think? You might want to remind them that they depend on referrals and you're not likely to recommend them to people you know if they're not treating you and others with respect. The top speed of your car according to this link below is 118 mph , so, you should have easily been able to go to 95 or more easily. However, I must remind you that this is "exhibition of speed", it's illegal and you can lose your license and go to jail in some cases. I have a 09 altima 2.5 that is doing the same thing off and on. usually never around short trips or in the city. only on interstate and caps out randomly around 70 or 80 mph. RPM always seem stable. its as if the gas peddle is not registering or the car down shifts. When this happens RMP stays around 4k which seems normal. no engine light. shutting the car off and back on seems to work. sometimes switching into manual shift will get it working again.

I have a 2016 Sentra doing the same around 80 MPS but my RPMs jump up and also drops. It feels like I’m topping out and like if it’s the governor however I’ve gone 100 MPH in this car so there’s no way it could be the governor.

Just found this because mine has a similar problem and I’ve taken it to a lot of mechanics and one finally told me it was this. https://static.nhtsa.gov/odi/tsbs/2015/SB-10074566- 2280.pdf

My 2012 sentra had the same problem. No acceleration after long trips. I would have the pedal to the floor on the freeway and would be lucky to hit 50mph. It ended up being the CVT. The CVT trasmission is not a cheap fix about $4000-$5000. Thankfully I had an extended warranty. That was about a year ago and now I am having a problem with acceleration from a stop. Not sure what the problem is this time.

I have a 2012 Sentra and it sounds like my issue is similar. If I start of in a Hill or any grade it has like no power and goes very slow. In park it sounds great when accelerating. Help?

I have a 2009 Sentra, the last two long highway trips it did the same thing about 150 miles out of town. Pulled off highway, let it cool down and took secondary roads. Sounds like the transmission, not good.

This sounds like the exact same problem I had in my 2010 Altima earlier this year. Nissan and multiple mechanics' diagnosis was a faulty transmission, which is a known issue for Nissans around this time. They may replace it for free if under 120,000 miles like they did for mine.

I’m having the exact same issue. Took the car to Nissan and all the tests came back normal. Got the car and boom it happened again. I took a video this time and returned to Nissan with proof. Hopefully they figure out what’s wrong.

Having this problem in a 2019 Chrysler Pacifica, it is a leased car, was wondering if, for that reason it could be a factory pre-set

Having the same trouble with a 2014 Nissan Rogue. I was trying to pass someone on driving in front of me and when I go to pass them, my vehicle wouldn’t go past 80 and stayed at the same rpm.

The same issue with my 2012 Nissan Altima SL, it might need a tuneup? Some auto shops say I need to get tuneup(like spark plug change and other things. It's totaling around $400 and I don't know if it's worth it too. Can some one please let me know.

My 2018 Nissan Sentra just started doing this. Just tonight, I was on the freeway going 80mph. My rpm's were between 2 and 3. It wouldn't go any higher. Sometimes it does it going uphill and at times on the street. I keep up with its maintenence and also, there is no check engine light or nothing. Help?

I have a 2018 Nissan Sentra Sv & it’s under 60,000 miles. I have taken this trip on long trips plenty of times 80-90mph no problem. Today 2 hours into my 3 hour trip it felt like it randomly downshifted. I got scared & slowed down. Only lasted a couple minutes. Than an hour & half on my way home it did it again & kept doing it on & off. I had the pedal to the floor & it wouldn’t break 80 MPH it would push 85mph. RPMs were riding between 3,000-4,000., I don’t understand it just had a full synthetic & oil change 2 days ago & a fuel treatment. It never did it before that. I take the car for routine maintenance around every 5,000-5,500 miles. I never been late. Tires rotated & everything else & now I am seeing a lot of other people with the same problem. Reading a lot of people say transmission & I pray not I still have payments on mine. It’s under 60,000 miles transmission doesn’t make sense. 59,106. Have u figured it out yet? Any answers?

I’m having the same issue with my 2019 Sentra and it has 38,000 miles on it. I took it to the Nissan dealership and they could not find anything wrong.
