SRS Light Comes on Intermittently in 2006 Honda Civic

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

Every now and again, the SRS light in my
2006 Honda Civic will come on (the red one
with the image of the little dude being hit by
his airbag).  It will stay on for an amount of
time, sometimes only for a few minutes,
sometimes for several days. However, it
always eventually disappears again, and will
not turn back on for weeks or months. Then
it will come on again for a random amount of
time before turning off once more. I took it to
a mechanic recently, and they told me that
there is something wrong with the airbag
sensor on my left side curtain airbag.
However, the light was not actually on in the
car at that time, and the mechanic did not
sound at all sure that he knew exactly what
was going on. He didn’t charge me and told
me to take it to a dealer. I’m not sure that I
can take it as a given that it’s the left side
curtain airbag sensor that is the issue. It
sounds like it could be any one of my safety
systems.

I’ve been digging around online, trying to get
an idea of repair costs. It has been difficult,
because I don’t really have any idea of what’s
wrong with the car. It’s going to cost me
almost $100 just to have the dealership
diagnose, and since this car is old and not
worth much money, if it’s an extensive repair
that is going to be required, I’m probably
going to just have to get a new car.

My questions are these:
-From what I have read, the airbags will not
deploy if the SRS light is on. Is there a
chance that my airbags might randomly
deploy when the SRS light is off, if there is an
issue with the sensor?
-Is it possible that this could be an issue with
my seat belts? If so, I have read in a few
places that Hondas have a lifetime warranty
on their seatbelts. Will the dealer replace
mine for free if that’s the issue?
-If I do take this in to get looked at by a
dealer, do I need to do it at a time when the
SRS light is actually on for them to be able to
accurately diagnose the problem?
-Has anyone ever run into this issue before
themselves? What ended up happening?
How much did it cost you to repair the issue?

Thank you in advance for any help you might
be able to offer!

Have you taken the car in to the dealer for the airbag recall?

@Js08016 Thank you so much for the thorough reply! I have had issues with the plastic liner under the front bumper peeling away, and I’m sure that makes the area even more vulnerable to corrosion. Do you think that the sensor will need to be replaced? If so, how much does that normally cost? Also, will I need to replace the liner beneath my car in order to keep this from happening again? Do you know how much that might cost me? Thank you again for your answer! I really think this might be the problem.
