Where is the water pump in a 2012 3.6 impala located and
is it connected to the timing chain?

You see this timing chain cover, up under the center section with at top is kinda v or u shape and under it is a roundish bowl shape with 6 mounting bolt holes and a thick hole in center of it (not the lower bigger crankshaft hole) the water pump mount to this cover there. Do not remove timing cover unless its leaking.

Ok thanks and how much coolant should I use to refill the system?

I would get a few gallons of pre-mix to have on hand and use most or all, drain radiator too to freshen up the coolant fluid with the extra.

Always a good idea to change thermostat with OEM and radiator hoses if old when doing a water pump.

Be sure not to mix orange dexcool and green coolant together. Refill with whatever coolant you had in the car. Mixing orange and green antifreeze can be deadly for your engine.
