Do I need a new torque converter Chevy impala 2012

Had my vehicle check cause check engine lite was
on computer said torque converter band and car
Shift well Then Mechanic Ask me how long has it I
been Since you change transmission fluid I said
never And he told me to change the transmission
Remove fluid and the light will go off

What does the tranny fluid look like , is it brown and burnt smelling , is it at the proper level ? Do you even have a dip stick ? If there is a place to add it and you have a crappy old shop vac suck out the old crap and take a look at it , you don't want to see any metal , then add the same amount of new , the car ain't that old and the filters have a large area so they rarely clog ,
