Overheating is a issue that needs to be taken care of, you should not be driving the car until it is fixed. The thermostat is usually the first thing to change out, and to make sure the fans are working on the radiator. A bad water pump or plugged radiator would cause overheating also. Overheating will cause the head (s) to warp and cause a bad head gasket. Signs would be white smoke coming from the exhaust, and the engine oil being milky and starting to get over full. One thing you could do first is to have the coolant tested for exhaust gasses, which would indicate or eliminate the head gasket. That way you not putting a lot of wasted time and money into it. Then change out the thermostat for starters.
