Caravan no crank no start
Asked by Jesus Aug 06, 2019 at 12:41 PM about the 2003 Dodge Caravan SE FWD
Question type: Maintenance & Repair
My 2003 Caravan kept dying while driving. I replaced the fuel pump and filter.
Now no crank no start. Battery and starter are good b/c I jumped #87 and #30
at starter relay and starter works fine. With key on I jumped the #87 and #30 at
pump relay and the pump is running but it won’t pump any gas. Please help,
thanks.

See the starter relay in diagram, the relay has two sides, the load side, right side in the diagram. Then you have the control side of relay, left side in diagram, terminals 85 and 86, voltage and ground. You can unplug relay, use both ends of test light between cavities 85 and 86, have helper turn key to crank, if the lamp comes on, you got good enough voltage and ground for the lamp. If the lamp doesn't work, your missing voltage or ground or both? Out of curiosity I looked at your security system. Starter motor and fuel pump disable. Have you tried a different key? Any applicable trouble codes? As far as your security system about all I can do is help you hunt and peck.
It has no security system, no chip keys just a base model. Starter motor less than a year old. It starts strong like it should when I jumper it. After I replace the pump & filter it started and ran. I have also replaced the ignition switch. It started and ran but won't crank as of now. I drove the van in the yard and for over 30 minutes when it was running. I shut it off and it restarts quickly many times. Battery is less than a year old, 12.4 volts. I came back to start the Van after about an hour the Van is no crank no start. It shows no engine light on dash nor codes on the OBD2 reader. I took the line apart from the rail and put it in a plastic bottle to catch some gas. I jumper the pump #87 and #30 with key on. I could see the line jerk a little when I made the contact with the jumper wire. The wife said she could hear the pump running too. The gasoline just doesn't flow. I am wondering if another source is shutting down the fuel delivery? ASD relay? or ECM controlling the fuel delivery? The Vin ID will not show on the reader. Thank you sir for a reply.
Make sure fuel lines are clear. You may have to use digital multimeter at the fuel pump as close as you can get and check voltage and ground at the rear. Did you check control side of relay, like I mentioned, with test lite? The pcm grounds control side of relay. If voltage and ground circuits--pcm--relay--pump are all ok, and that's a lot of ifs? There are only two reasons, I know of, why the pcm won't ground the relay, one is your security system, the other is, the computer doesn't see an rpm signal. If you can't communicate with pcm, I'd have to check that out? Possible problem with pcm? I don't want to see you throw parts at it, you need it diagnosed properly and I can't do that from here.
Still no crank or start. I checked again and the van doesn't have a security system. Also dealership says it doesn't use chip keys. I cleared the fuel line from the tank to disconnected line from rail. Gas came out into bottle when I blew air. There was not any trash in it. There is 12 volts at the pump wire connection at the tank with 30 and 87 jumped. I checked the control side of starter relay 85 and 86 there is zero voltage and there is voltage on 87 and 30. And checked 85 and 86 of ASD relay, test light comes on and goes off for 2 seconds when I turn the key on. With the key on there is zero voltage to 85 and 86 of pump relay, there is voltage at the 87 and 30. The OBD2 doesn't show a Vin. number for the van, is this an issue? Thank you sir for your kind help and reply.
I forgot to say with key engaged. I checked the control side of starter relay 85 and 86 there is zero voltage.
Other than what I've posted, I can't help you? Good luck
