Fuel Level Issues

Asked by HelpmyMazdaplease Dec 18, 2019 at 11:02 AM about the 2012 Mazda CX-9 Touring AWD

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

The fuel pump died on my 2012 Mazda CX-9.   Had a shop replace the fuel
pump (Part FG1715).   Apparently this model also has a separate Fuel Tank
Sending Unit as well which was also replaced (FG264A).  My problem now is
my Fuel gauge only goes to a little past half way when filling the tank all the
way.  I also get engine code PO460 which is a fuel level senor issue.  We
changed both parts twice and had the same issue with new parts.  The
strange thing is my range has decreased from 340 miles to 280 Miles on a
full tank.  Apparently the ohms were checked and everything read correctly.
Could the installer mounted the pump or sender incorrectly causing the float
to hit the side of the tank?  What would cause the range to change so much?
Nobody seems to be able to help me or have the same problem.

I think you are on the right track and something is affecting the level indicator - either physically or with incorrect calibration. If the shop you used won't stand behind their work, take it to a Mazda dealer or other reliable shop to get it fixed. Then hand the bill to the original shop and negotiate their repayment to you (including taking them to court depending on what caused the problem).
