2012 Mercedes C350 Start Issue

2012 C350 Blue Efficiency Model

Ignition seems to only work dash instruments.  No wheel lock.  Radio will turn
on after holding down power button.  Ignition does nothing and get a “Take
key with you” message when trying to start car with key and not start button.  
Lights are operable.  Tried an emergency dump charger thinking maybe car
needed jump,  but appears to be no change.  This happened before and
dealer said just a dead battery, but new battery is less than two years old.

Update: Got the car to start in neutral with spare key. Appears to be the ignition not recognizing the key or something blocking ignition even with key in the ignition.
