2012 GL450 won't go into gear

Asked by Guru15ZZW Aug 23, 2019 at 10:32 AM about the 2012 Mercedes-Benz GL-Class GL450 4MATIC AWD

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

My vehicle starts up without hesitation but when I try to put it in gear it does
nothing. Yesterday after trying for 20 minutes I was able to get in reverse by
turning the car off and on and finally it went in reverse but then it was stuck
and would not go in drive for about another 15 minutes of doing the same
thing. Finally I was able to get it in Drive and drove home, driving the car was
fine, no transmission issue or engine loss of power but my blinkers didn't
start working until 30 minutes into my drive and my wipers would just come
on intermittently. This morning same issue.  I've never had any issue with
this vehicle and this all just started yesterday morning. Please help!!!!

Thank you for help! We are dropping it off at the shop this weekend. This answer does calm my ulcer some! I will update with what the mechanic says.

I have a 2011 GL450 that has the same issue. Will sometimes start, won't go into gear, about every dash light is on (ESP, ABS, check engine, SRS, windshield wipers go on intermittently, LIM, drive to dealership without shifting gears). I wish there were a way to drive this to my MB dealership an hour away. They may have to drag it out of my garage and flatbed it there. That will be cheap! Any suggestions?

Agreed. I do need to have MB get this to the shop and get this fixed. I am in rural northern michigan, so the nearest dealer is 60 miles away - no closer option. At this point, short of someone with almost exact issues - and a simple "oh, I found a bad relay, solved!", I need the shop to figure this out.

My GL450 did the exact same thing. Drove home from the dealer, would not start the next day. After about a week, went out and car started but would not go into gear. Wipers would intermittently come on, every dash light would come on. Had it towed to a German certified ASE mechanic - found moisture leaking into the rear cargo and Rear SAM was fried. Controls so many of the electrical components. I am now to the point where I hate this car and I hate Mercedes.
