re: 2012 Honda Accord timing chain

Asked by GuruG8C3F Aug 27, 2020 at 08:59 AM about the 2012 Honda Accord EX-L

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

I own a 2012 Honda Accord EX-L V4 with 94,000 miles.  Honda dealer told me
because of the age of the car and not the mileage I should replace the Timing
Beltchain.  Their price $1450.00.  What is your professional opinion?

Unless it's making noise or your check engine light is on with a related code I say leave it alone. With proper maintenance, such as regular oil changes, a timing chain will last to 150,000 miles and beyond. I say save your money! Hope that helps! Jim

Frequent oil changes will help your timing chain last longer. Chains have hundreds of small parts that wear. Any wear makes the chain stretch which will eventually cause a chain rattle. Changing oil at long intervals only saves money in the short term.
