Hi! This is your HVAC Blower Motor that is the issue. This is the motor that blows hot or cold air for your entire A/C system, and its located right behind your glovebox. It may need replacing; I had to replace my HVAC Blower Motor on my 2011 Jeep Liberty because it was making an annoying "ticking" noise and would increase with the fan speed controls. Its pretty easy to replace yourself: really just a few hex bolts (for my liberty at least, not sure about the patriot), and then you uncouple a wiring harness or two, and put the new motor in!

I have the same noise in my 2012 Patriot. I don’t believe it is the fan itself. There is a white filter that rotates forward and downward. When it gets in place above the fan, it seems to want to go further, but cannot. That is what causes the chattering noise. It only lasts about four seconds then stops. Only happens when ac/heat is just starting.
