Overheats quickly? - usually a blown head gasket. Check the oil for water/coolant contamination Pressure test the cooling system Compression test See if the fan is coming on Thermostats only have to do with MINIMUM operating tempratures

Great suggestions. -- Also check the water pump, it is possible that coolant is not circulating. -- 1. Start engine, let reach operating temp. 2. Have friend rev engine to 3,000 rpm, squeeze upper coolant hose, check for fluid movement. If nothing is going on, you've got a water pump problem.
