crankshaft position sensor.. it controls the idle of your jeep.. i had the same problem with my jeep.. its like 80 for the part at autozone.. i got it for 30 bucks on ebay
It sounds like a sensor, ecu or electrical issue. Does the car just turn off or does it drop in idle and die?
Matt....If your solution to the problem is correct,I will buy a new position sensor. Without a correct diagnosis I just don't trust this car for a drive to town. Thanks,Dave Simon...It turns off while driving down the road. Also if I turn off engine at ignition switch, leave for 15min and try to restart engine, it will turn over but not restart.I tried every 2 hrs. It restarted the next morning. Once it stopped while standing and idling. Then I had another difficult start.Thanks...Dave
ok maybe not a sensor. Could it be a clogged fuel filter? I think a sensor would either fail completely and stop the car running or working
I have noted on my yj that the fuel lines were moved and insulated from heat, Sounds like the old vapor lock sensation. If your fuel lines are ran in a position that could get a heat source try insulating the line and see if this dosnt stop the issue. I bought it with the conversion on the fuel lines, just a educated guess I have had the situation on another jeep I had . Good luck
I have an 89 and used to have the carb rebuilt every six months. They were pieces of crap in this particular model year. Once I replaced it with a Weber, I never had that problem again.
I believe it is a vapor lock issue myself. I am experiencing the same problem. try when it quits to pour water on the carberator not in it but on the outside of it then see if it will start ! I beileve that there is a different carb set up or spacer out there that will solve this problem I am waiting for some answers also !
I used to have that problem. Like Lesia, I replaced the carburetor with the Weber, and haven't had any more issues. It's really nice to not have to keep your foot on the accelerator at a red light. My Jeep is a 1989 Wrangler, 4.2 with the factory 3 Speed Auto Transmission

1997 JEEP GRAND CHEROKEE. JUST REPLACED BATTERY CAUSE IT WOULDN'T START. NOW IT JUST SHUT OFF WHILE TURNING A CORNER. PLENTY OF GAS. NO NOISE MADE OR ANYTHING. IDEAS PLEASE?
Possibly check your T.P.S (throttle Position sensor)
Sounds like might be the validators in your ecm. Watch video on replacing capicator they are 25v 220uf you can get them online or your local electronic store
I don't have an answer yet...did the tps and fuel pump and the sim module..still acting up. 2006 Rubicon with 97,000. My wife won't drive it, and at this point I don't blame her. This seemed to happen more during a shift and accelerating. Lights come on and then go off. Wait a minute or two and then it will crank over again. This can go weeks and then bang happens again. Unbelievable that this has not been addressed by Chrysler Jeep. Trusted mechanics have done work and they are scratching their heads. Anyone...anyone Bueller?
Happened to me several times in my 1993 Wrangler. It was the ignition coil.

Dr, im in 93 now. Same thing. Coil crossed my thinkin. No codes thrown.. just changed fuel filter, .. no fix. That dam illusive guost.
Chronic problem with Jeep Cherokee and Wranglers. Basically, crappy electrical system. Demand they replace the TIPM, on their dime. Chrysler/Jeep has know about this problem for years, but refuses to do anything about it.
I am having the same issue right now and I have replaced ECM, fuel pump, fuel filter, fuel regulator, plugs, plug wires, coil distributor, map sensor, TPS sensor crank sensor Checked for vapor lock, replaced fuel line, replaced fuel injectors and I have used seafoam and removed catalytic converter. It still will run really good for about 30 minutes then it acts like it is starved for fuel.

My 2011 Jeep Grand Cherokee randomly shuts off - often in the middle of an intersection. It's ridiculously dangerous, yet I just picked it up the the Jeep dealer where they couldn't replicate the problem - I still have to drive a car with my children's and my life at risk. Who has advice?
if its cold it runs,if get warm stop..reason..little crack in intake manifold it has the same problem like VW Passat 1990...replace intake manifold....

They are known for heat soak, 3rd injector and back towards the firewall wrap with heat protector from manifold it vapor locks and is a common problem. Makes the engine temp sensor run rich or lean
My 1990 Jeep Wrangler (YJ) has been having similar issues, I’ve been told it’s carb problems and idling, every time I’m at an intersection or stop sign, slowing down my car or stopping it shuts down, so i have to put it in park and start my car again stopping traffic, did these two comments help your Jeep out?

My 2018 Wrangler is doing it now. Had it towed day before yesterday to dealer. Yesterday it came back and they said batteries were low but good. Did it again today and back in shop.
Well it sounds to me like a failing mag pickup in your distributor , had the same problem with an old Mustang it would suddenly die after running for a half hour then let it sit for a while it would fire right back up and run perfect
My 2014 is doing the same thing. Replaced cat , 3 separate sensors. Nothing is working. Please help and thank you Scott

My goodness... It sounds like the cause of this stalling problem is EVERYTHING!!! :/ I just wired in a new radio and it seems to be great. But my first drive with the new tunes... I got about 1/3 mile from my house and it stalled in the middle of Main Street. I mess with some wires thinking I solved what might be a short and test drove it again the next day... same deal.. made it about 1/3 of a mile (after it started up beautifully) and it just stalled out... wouldn't start back up right away either time.
I had the exact same problem my 91 wrangler 4.0 , shut down while driving, no trouble codes flashing, no warning light, no check engine, after researching all I could in the internet an replace every sensor, wiring, fuel pump etc.etc., I decide to make a contact wire whit a couple of alligator clips at the ends to direct crank the engine, it occurs to me to hold and wiggle the connector to the coil while cranking and the dam thing start right up, so I just press it down whit my tweezers trying to make it connect tighter and work ok for a while, after that every time that stalls on me I just went to the tighten the connector routine . It is a problem trying to find a replacement, I end up ordering mine over the internet and last a couple a month’s to arrive, needless to say that a 20 dollar fix could have save me hundreds if I only knew better .
