my 2012 toyota corolla S just recently indicates a flashing lock symbol where the passenger side airbag light is. When a passenger is in the seat, the light indicates "on". When no one is in the seat - and only when my car is turned off - does the flashing lock appear.

The flashing lock symbol you are noticing is the alarm system.
