Hi, what's the best type of gas to use in a 2012 Toyota Corolla

Regular 87 is fine. Premium is a waste of money.... just buy from the retailers in this link -- They have the proper detergents http://www.toptiergas.com/retailers/
There is no more energy in a gallon of 91 that a gallon of 87. The difference is the flash-point ..or the temperature the fuel ignites, and they contain the same detergents. A high compression engine needs premium 91 so it will not pre-detonate. i.e. ignite from heat and compression. before the spark plug fires. Your Corolla does not need it. Now, if you care...refineries do not manufacture mid-grade "Plus" 89 octane. When the delivery comes to a retailer, the guy will put ½ regular and ½ 'premium' 91 in the storage tank. That's if they're honest. Then you have mid-grade. The tanker trucks do not carry three different gasolines.
Octane depends on where you live. 85 octane will work in Colorado at high elevations, but 87 octane is the norm elsewhere.
OK fellas, you all make perfect sense.

Darn Bob beat me to it ! Location location location ! 85 serves us here in Colorado Springs @ 7000 feet and above Pinging is the culprit or predetonation of the fuel causes havoc on the valves! Im sure 85 would sufficeif youre above sea level!
But you can only find 85 in high elevations...
