Question type: General

Intermittant problems when starting car I select a gear either 1st or reverse and
the car wont move.  I have to turn engine on and off a few tines before car
engages and moves.  This does not do it all the time, had Abarth specialist
look at it but it did not replicate problem so they said there was nothing wrong
with it.  It's still doing it and driving me mad can anyone help?

Hi I have the same problem and fiat are ignoring that there is a problem. The first time it happened They replaced the break sensor $700 and didn’t fix it. 2nd time they did work to the gear box $6000 and didn’t fix. Car is currently at fiat and they are still saying no issue. I’m at ends with it all.

@Guru359Q1 : I am taking the car to a local shop on monday. Hope they can replicate the issue and find the cause. I will post a message once I know more... @Jerseygirl4045 : How did you go around this thing when you had the car ? Did you just turn it on/off again and again until it actually started ? If so, would it start after 10 tries ? 30 tries ? More ? I am asking because yesterday I literaly had to leave the car alone for nearly two hours after it eventually got into motion... Thanks for your input !

@Guru359Q1 : Thanks so much, this post is kind of a relief and I hope this is the fix to the issue. If it is only a question of topping up the fluid (), it's not too bad... I will definelty come back and update when I have more information !!

Hi all, First findings only, car is still under investigations... When I took it to the garage, situation actually got worse, pressing 1 or R would not do anything at all (previously, it would still show 1 or R on the screen but the car would not move or drive). The screen would show "N" and eventually an error message came up saying "gearbox unavailable" (I am located on the French riviera, car is French so this message may somewhat be different for UK/US cars as I have just translated "word for word"). The mechanic left the car with the engine running, gearbox on neutral and pushed it into the workshop to connect his OBD2 device. After a couple of minutes of him doing things with the computer, I could literally hear the robot that changes the gears come back into play. Just computer work, did not even open the hood at this stage... He pressed 1, the car went forward, he pressed R, the car went backwards !! I wouldn't have believed it, had I not seen it myself... From what I understood, he re-installed the software for the gearbox and reset all values. A few things he mentioned : - Dualogic gearboxes are not automatic gearboxes per say. It is literaly a regular manual gearbox on which they have attached a robot that operates the clutch and changes the gear on the behalf of the driver. - The above means that Fiat/Abarth owners of a car that has a "robotised gearbox" not only have to worry about the gearbox itself but they also have to worry about the robot that operates the gearbox... - One main thing to check is the level and quality of the fluid for the robot (not to be mistaken with the gearbox fluid which is something else !). If level too low, not enough pressure, robot won't work. - Clutch is also to be checked. If in poor state, the robot will refuse to change gears in order to preserve its own self as well as to preserve the gearbox. This problem could therefore have several causes like a faulty clutch, a faulty robot, a faulty electronic module controlling the robot, low fluid level as seen above or it could just need a software update... Car is still with mechanic, he wants to drive it and test it more. He suspects the clutch to be a problem causing all the issues, might have to change it all at once. I will come back with more info when I have some !

Forgot to add something... If you are stuck in your car with above problem, the mechanic gave me a couple of things to try to get it going so that you can get home or to the nearest garage : 1. Unplug the minus (black) connector of the battery for a minute and plug it back. It may get the cause to disappear. 2. If that doesn't work, you can try turning the car on, leave it on N, push it for a couple of meters on a flat road and try to press 1 while wheels are turning. The computer may think the car is in motion and force the robot to activate a gear. That sounds a bit scary though... Needless to say, you have to be very very very very very very careful when attempting this !!!!!!!

Same problem with twice in last year had huge explosion in the engine compartment. For sure there must be something with gearbox or whatever. I opened hood and cant see anything wrong. But sound was like bomb exploded under car

Has anyone any updates to this thread as my 2013 Abarth is doing exactly the same $1200 later it’s still doing this. I’m in Australia which doesn’t help. Is it more than likely the clutch is the issue?

hello i have a 500 abarth 2012 model located in Beirut Lebanon... and it just happened to me today, i have a dualogic gearbox, i put the gear into 1, it was selected on the screen but the car wouldnt move, shifted into gear 2 then R but still it didnt move i turned the car off and on again once and everything was back to normal ... an other thing that sometimes happens (but rarely) i shift the gear into 1 and as soon as i start to move the gear goes back to Neutral, i wait till my RPM goes back down and shift to 1 and the car would start moving again ... when i took it to the garage and connected it to the scanner no errors show which is strange and annoying but till now i managed to live with it .. i love this car just wouldnt want all that happening to me while on the highway while driving over 140KM/H :) so if anyone found a solution plzzz post it and thanks :)
