Keyless Entry continually flashes

Asked by GuruV1Z95 Aug 26, 2018 at 09:07 PM about the 2013 Ford Explorer XLT

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

Hi all!  Last Sunday, my battery died.  It was still under warranty, so I was able
to get a new one.  Friday night, a neighbor drove by my house and called to
tell me that they keypad on my door was blinking.  I tried to get it to turn off
(got in, started the car, pressed buttons, etc) and it continued to blink.  It drove
fine all day on Saturday.  I went to run an errand late today (Sunday - exactly
one week from brand new battery), and it's dead again.  Whatever is causing
the blinking door panel is draining my battery.  Does anyone have any idea why
the key panel is blinking or how do I fix it or trouble shoot?

I have a 2015 Fusion and it is doing this as well. Brought it to Ford dealer, they checked with diagnostic test and found nothing. When it rains, sometimes my key lights will turn on, blink, etc. I am bringing car back to dealer this week and let them know about the blinking key lights that I believe are the reason my battery keeps dying. Anyone else figure this out yet? I will keep you posted.

I have the same issue on my 2012 Flex. To avoid draining the battery I removed the fuse until I have a chance to get it fixed. For my car it is fuse 13 in the internal passenger compartment fuse box. (box located under the instrument panel...above left foot when driving). The down side is the fuse also controls the power seat and power mirrors. The problem seems to be caused by water getting in the section of the door where the keypad is. I noticed a gap where it's separating slightly at the top of the door. I sealed it for now with some black electrical tape. You can't even notice it.

I have a 2017 doing same thing. Been on the internet for hours reading everything I can. While only a few people talk about water getting in the panel somehow, I am almost positive that’s what happened to mine. We had A LOT of sideways rain today and this did not start until then. I had been driving all day prior to the rain and it wasn’t doing it. After the storm, it started. Took a fuse out to stop battery from being an issue. Now it’s saying my lift gate is open. It’s not. So now it’s worse because that’ll sure drain the battery as the lights are on now. I have plans to visit a ford dealership in the morning. Fuse box is in the most ridiculous, tight spot ever, by the way, and it was the biggest pain to get to.

ok , heres what I came up with. I belive that water has gotten down into the top of the door , and corroded the switch in the door panel, mine started doing this last week. dead battery anytime we left it for 8 hours, and the panel flashing all the time, I removed the interior door panel , and unplugged the switch panel inside the door, had no issues now for 2 days. I am probably going one further and ordering a new switch panel, but when i put it on ill silicone the top of the panel to prevent water from running into the top of the door

Mine door key pad tend to flash a day or two depending on the weather after the vehicle is washed . I think water / moisture is getting in and shorting it out. I’m no mechanic but it seems logical.

2018 XLT Explorer key pad stayed on or flashed ran bat down, when I pulled the key pad off the door found that the wires had been chaffed during install at factory just inside the whole the wires go through at the bottom sometimes they would touch the metal sometimes water shorted them across. replaced the touch pad/molding and BLAM no more problem. Good Luck

I have a 2017 Ford Explorer and doing this same exact thing. Replaced battery and now noticing the flashing red touch key pad. Ford needs to do better and recall these. This is not cool!

Had the same problem with our 2011 Ford Explorer when it rained. Went away after driving it. Now our 2018 is doing the same thing and killing the battery. Obviously, Ford didn't do this right with the new models. Our 1997 and 2003 Explorers had a different pad with five individual buttons. Never a problem. Best bet is to get inside the door panel and remove connection to pad.

I have a 2017 Explorer and also having same issue. This really does need to be a recall. Battery was dead and couldn't even unlock door to pop the hood. Had to have a wrecker come out to unlock door because of course door key was missing from key fob.

Can it be unplugged? Will unplugging affect anything else? I just won’t use mine. Same thing. Dead battery today, flashing keypad after raining. Sucks 2017 ford explorer platinum. Dealer says your batteries dead….. no kidding.

This just happened for the first time on my 2017 Ford Explorer platinum. Bought used and the keypad for the door never has worked. Set it back to the factory and still will not take a new code. Forgot about it, never needed it or used it. Today the darn thing decided to drain the battery. Looked through these comments and only found one answer, new key fob, new battery, reset car to factory. Does anyone else have a fix? Can it be disabled?
