Cargurus predetermined suggested asking price on listing page

Asked by Robert Mar 28, 2019 at 07:15 PM about the 2013 Hyundai Genesis Coupe 3.8 Grand Touring RWD

Question type: Shopping & Pricing

Why does Cargurus suggested asking price for privately owned and dealer
sold vehicles differ? When I'm selling the car at the price I'm asking for, it is
deemed "High", but when a dealer sells the same model with the same
condition and mileage, then a "Great Deal" or "Good Deal" shows on the
listing. I see it all the time and it is HIGHLY unfair!!! It reduces my chances of
selling my vehicle and also invites "lowballers" to chime in. Additionally,
Cargurus suggested sales prices is a LOT lower than what Kelley Blue Book
shows for similar models, condition, equipment and mileage.

Dealers have a business to run. They have multi million dollar showrooms, lounge lizard salesmen to support, closers, finance guys, secretaries, mechanics and parts guys to support, you don't.

This just isn't fair for the private seller. A dealer can list a car for $16.000 (+ dealer fees) and be on top of the listings with a "Great Deal" attached to it and when I sell my identical car for $14.000 (no dealer fees), then I'm on the bottom of the listings and a red "High" tag attached to it!! Screw that! And I don't give a flying you know what about the dealer expenses! Cargurus shouldn't punish private sellers for trying to receive a fair price for their vehicles. Instead, they seem to be promoting dealers only! I'm pulling my listing!

I totally agree. The suggested price on my bmw roadster is roughly half what they are selling for, and on MY ad, which I paid to place, they mark it as overpriced. Unbelievable. They are totally in bed with their dealers. And they put their suggested price in the ad, which I did not notice until inquires flooded in from people thinking they were making a steal.
