Noise and vibration after 60 MPH

Asked by m1n2l3k4 Sep 03, 2014 at 10:46 AM about the 2013 Lincoln MKT EcoBoost AWD

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

I have a new 2013 MKT with 2000 miles. Starting at 60 mph and up I get a cabin noise
and vibration in the steering wheel and seats. The dealer has re balanced the tires and tell
me it isn't the tires. But, they have no idea as to where the noise is originating from. Has
any other owners experienced this?

Your dealer says it isn't the tires but what does he say he thinks it is? Sounds like a tire problem to me. With only 2000 miles on the car, have him swap the tires with ones from another vehicle and see if the problem goes away. If it doesn't, he needs to work harder to fix it for you. If it does go away, he will only be a little embarassed.

I am looking at a 2013 MKT for sale that supposedly was turned back in to Lincoln due to lemon law and same type of vibration. I've been trying to research this and found a post on line about a Ford Flex where the TPMS sensors were somehow coming 'loose' inside the wheel. Maybe worth a look?

Had my 2013 MKT with AWD and the 20" wheel option to 2 different dealers for vibration throughout entire vehicle. Your need to have the wheels checked to make sure they are true. Apparently these wheels bend very easily on the inboard side. I don't mean a visible bend, they need to be checked for being out of round. 2nd dealer raised the car on a lift with a driver. Turned off traction control, put car in drive and rotated wheels about 20-30 mph. I couldn't believe how out of round they were. Between the dealer and ford they replaced 2 out of their pocket. This is not a warranty item, but if your car is fairly new and you complain enough...

Just purchased a 2014 Lincoln MKT AWD 3.5 Eco-booster 20" Wheels used with 39,000 miles. Noticing a slight-moderate vibration from wheels between 73 mph - 77mph. I just had wheels balanced and still have the problem. Thinking wheels? tires? possibly drive shaft the cause????

I have a 2013 MKT brought it 3yrs ago with 24,000 miles. I’ve had the same slight vibration every on post about. Been to several dealers they can’t find problem. Took it to my local shop had him put car up on the lift and spinning the wheels. Mechanic could feel vibration with car off the ground. So in my case problem has nothing to do with the tires or wheel balancing. I’m thinking it’s something internal maybe transmission. Drive shaft bushings seemed tight. Also my PTU is now leaking oil at 70,000 miles. Power take off unit PTU is the front transfer case. It’s not serviceable now that’s a $2000 repair plus this mysterious vibration. Cutting my losses getting rid of car.

Update. My last option was to have tires balanced again. This particular dealer does road force balance cost $77 with tax. Road force balance they use a wheel to apply 1500psi of pressure to tires. This machine tell tech where to apply the balance weights and also tells tech to rotate tires on the rim to a different position. I’m not saying this solved the problem 100% but I can barely feel vibrations now. Drove on interstate up and down to 40-90mph my cell phone use to shake sitting in the holder. Before, I could see slight vibration in rear passenger side seat. Also I could feel vibration in driver position floor boards and seat. Issue is much, much better now I can’t really complain about it anymore. If someone out there is still searching for the issue. Find a shop that does road force balancing. My local Ford dealer balanced mine. Places like NTB and discount tire do not have road force machine.

I bought a 2010 MKT with 48,000 and had the same vibration you speak of around 65 - 70 mph. First I had tires balanced with no luck and was checking for a bad rear wheel hub when I found the ball joint ends of the toe links bad (both left and right sides). To check you have to jack the car up under spring area of the rear control arm and shake tire fore and aft, to see the play. You won't see any up and down movement. If you jack it up under the frame and let the rear control arm hang down, the weight and pressure won't let you see any play. Pretty simple job and vibration was gone after replacing them.
