Dodge Durango 2001 4x4 - 5.9 Transmission Blown - Locked in Drive
Asked by Oxygen801 Oct 14, 2012 at 11:45 PM about the 2001 Dodge Durango SLT 4WD
Question type: Maintenance & Repair
My girlfriend was driving down the freeway, unknowingly driving it in 4LO, put it in neutral and tried to put it back in drive while going about 50mph. I know..huge no no. However, I need to know what i should do. I'm going to pull the tranny and transfer case. I wonder if I should expect to rebuild the tranny or maybe replace it. Where exactly should I start? What happened? I'm not a pro at trannys so any help would be appreciated!

Its really hard to tell what the real issue would be it could just be the transfer case. I had a friend do the same thing in to a 99 ranger with manual transmition, and the only thing needing replacement was the transfercase. Does it go into park? Reverse? Other gears? If not any then there is a bigger issue and u will need to look @ the tranny in which case ur looking @ a possible rebuild but thats a worse case scenario, it could be a warped gear or drive belt let me know it this helps or what conclussion u come to, im interested
It's locked in drive. When it blew, a piece of the transfer case or transmission (not sure which) casing blew off. The piece is about 6 inches in diameter. I haven't got into it yet. I'll upload the picture of it, if possible.

Ok well there is a big diff u r gonna have to crawl under and see for sure which 1 it is even if it was the transfercase that blew the fact still remains that u have a big problem bcs the tranny is locked in drive..... Either way u r looking @ the worst case scenario and having to rebuild/ replace the tranny and transfercase too but until u know where that piece of shrapnel came from u wont know what exactly needs to be done
