why wont my durango start if its not the fuel pump

I also have a 98 Durango 5.2 4x4. I changed the fuel pump because one day as I was backing out it turned off on me and did not want to turn back on. the motor cranks over but does not turn on. the fuel gauge says low fuel and even the fuel light turns on. when I changed the fuel pump it had about 5 gal in the tank and that's more then enough to get it started. I checked the fuses and the changed the fuel pump relay with another relay that has the same part numbers. still nothing, I even changed the crankshaft position sensor and still the same thing. does anyone have any idea what could it be? does the transmission have anything to do with the Durango not starting? Like sensor wise? I would really appreciate some feed back on this problem. thank you. 06/22/14
The engine needs 3 things to get started, fuel, air and spark. If you put the ingition key to on with out starting having your drivers door open you should hear the fuel pump if you don´t check realays and fuses. Check if there is something blocking the air flow check the air filter you can even take it out and check if it will start with out it if it does get a new one. check if you get spark, you can take one spark plug out connect the wire to it and give the thread on the outside of the spark plug ground, like let it touch clean metal on the engine or the body and let someone crank the engine and see if you get a spark. If you dont you might need a tune up or a new coil or coils depending on what motor you have there is one on the 5,2 and the 5,9 but 8 on the 4,7 and not likely that al of them die at the same time unless a fuse is blown.
My dodge do range is a 2002, and it turns over but won't crank! I put new sensors in, and a brand new fuel pump in, it still won't crank! Now what could that be!

Hey Cynthia, same here. Did you find fix? I have noticed that when I first put in the key and turn to prepare to crank engine over, the dash lights up, prestart check lights and all, and...And... the fuel gauge will function. IF it did not start, I start all over and I note if fuel gauge registers or not. When fuel gauge moves, truck starts.... AND even if many attempts, it is not, Not flooded. Do you see similar symptoms with yours? Thanks for please share your results. Scott
My durango will not start , there's no noise coming from engine when I turn key
I have power , but want turn over
Scott99Durango answered 9 years ago
Hello, it won't turn over. Different issue there. Make sure starter is getting power. After that, several other sensors act to see if it is "ready". Scott
But check engine lite never came on
Scott99Durango answered 9 years ago
So, you open door, some lights come on, insert key, turn but not to start, just to see all lights on dash ck in, you hear fuel pump run for 2 seconds, fuel gauge registers fuel amount in tank, and then you turn key all the way to start and nothing happens? What happens if you also turn on headlights, do they dim as you try to start? Scott
Having the same problem and just replaced the crank sensor. I started it and let it run for a min or two and killed it doing it several times then drove it around the block, came back killed it and tried to start it and it just kept cranking and never started. Let sit over night and just got off work and started it up then killed it, it started twice befor doing the same thing agAin. Is it possible the new crank sensor went out or is it a PCI problem.
My lights do dim when i crank it over. FYI.

DouginParker answered 8 years ago
Mysticallover34, did you figure this out? Exact same thing happens to me in a 2002 Durango with new alternator and battery. Doug
Mystic and Dougin, having similar issues. Haven't done anything yet, trying to figure out first thing to try. Any suggestions?

Mine is running fine for the last 4 days. The only thing I notice is that I have to pump the gas a few times while it is turning over in order for it to start. Guessing that is a sensor but it could just be how cold it has been here is Colorado lately.

Have any of you figured this out? My 02 durango is doing this. Drive it, take it home, try to restart it, it just turns over but no start. Changed fuel pump and crank shaft sensor.

My 2002 Durango came from Ca where it was sort of lugging a bit, the shop told me there was no fuel filter ( dumb), then I get it to the mid west , put crap gas in it and it is dead! I am trying a fuel pump, filter, relay circuit- ( new recall now 2011+), of course mine is too old, also check air mass sensor or the fuel relay circuit. If not, I am DONE!! Mad girl from Cali..

Thank you.. ok, after countless hours at 4 shops.. I replaced the IAC valve ($210.00) parts and labor. I will say that the fuel is horrible out here. I put in engine cleaner, worse. I hope that other ppl will help me, and please replace your IAC valve. It died while driving numerous times..
The Last night my car shot down by hes self..in that moment thing dont have gas i put more gas but still with the problem. .the next day put gas directly in the throttle body an the car start...any way the fuel pump dont work but i tray check the relay and fuse but inside the fuse box dont have any one...that car haved only the space for that but any relay is in that space....i think tray with power directly to the battery any fuel pump positive wire..??

Have similar issue. 02 durango crank no start no bus in dash. With a lot of strenuous and stressful checking under hood I found out that my issue was in the wire harness where it connects to crank position sensor found that the wire had some how got too hot guessing from where the exhaust pipe runs had ruined my wire also found valve cover gasket leaking oil and ran down the wire also possible issue found this by wiggling harness on passenger side where it runs behind the motor down to sensor. After I wiggled it I heard my fuel pimp kick on and when I turned it over it started right up. Hope this help guys!
Check your ignition coil and ensure both connectors are properly attached and infact remove and reconnect both of them, also check if it is burned out our even cracked to see if you may need to replace them. then check the spark plugs to endure none of them are damaged/disordered/etc
My dad's 2000 Durango 5.9 will fail to start. I then switch one of the relays in the relay box with the Asr. After I do that it it runs fine for an undetermined amount of time. I'm installing a new fuel pump ,I've found it happens sooner with low fuel. My guess would be the pump is heating up and drawing too much current. I'll fix it in a week when the new one is in.
ASR is auto shutdow relay
I have a 99 Durango 5.2 liter four wheel drive SLT. Did great on the test drive at the dealership brought it home. Went out the next morning and it wouldn't start. After countless hours of picking and prying and testing with a test light everything seems in order except the PCU was not firing a signal of any kind to the coil. All wires in excellent condition. Read on here one time that you can squeeze the PCU connections and you will hear a relay click. This trick worked for 6 hours then the trick failed no matter what I did. I took it to the dealership and had the PCU replaced and VIN number entered. Brand new distributor cap and rotor button. Brand new battery $325. Picked it up from dealership running like a champ. Got home, went out to start it 5 hours later and nothing. same thing. I use the same routes I took just to find the same problem. Apparently at the dealership a specialist was flown in from Chrysler in Michigan here to Tampa Florida just to trace the problem yet I'm still sitting here what's a dead Durango. Helpppppp
Anyone who can make sence of this and help me I would love the help... In a nutshell It will not start right up. I have to keep myy foot on the gas the second it strarts to come off the car shuts off. When it is runn (while my foot is on the gas ) it runs ruff sometimes smooth but it depends on how I hold my foot on the gas peddle. The check engine light is not on any more. Eric frind got it to come on a couple days ago. Here's the hestory.. The day we picked up the Durango it drove like a dream all the way home. NO problems. The second day I had to replace the battery. The one it had was too small. (how it even worked surprised the people at AutoZone). After that it ran great! After a few days it ran great. Then I had to get gas. As soon as I pulled into the spot I had to turn it on and back up. It would not start back up untill a few trys. I just thought it was a glitch. I drove it to a location 5 mins away and when I took my foot off the gas it stopped in the driveway of the store. It took a bit then started up again. I had to park to go inside for about 15 mins. Came back and it took me 20 mins to get it to start. It died on me about 2 blocks away. I turned down a side road in fear of it dying on the main road. As soon as I turned and had to stop at a stop sign it stopped for good. THank goodness for Bob who lived on the corner. he helped us pull it over and wait for the tow truck. Erics dad checked to see if power was getting to the spark plugs and they are getting power. Erics friend broght his tester to hook to the computer and said the speed sensor was a problem. We replaced it. Still no help. I had another friend come out and test it and it said the throttle position sensor was not good. We replaced that... nothing...All of these codes came up (P0500, We replaced that P0141, Still need to replace it, P0161 also needs to be replaced. We where told that if we replaced the Throttle Sensor it would fix the others. I am at my wits end I can't afford to keep throwing money away.
i have a 99 durango 4x4 5.2 if you look at the odometer and it say no bus when your trying to start it, its the computer you can get them from autozone or if you feel like it you can go to a junk yard and match the numbers on the computer to see if that is it i paid 45 bucks for one to confirm it was and still had to warranty it three times to get one that worked right from autozone dealer wanted 950 then still had to pay to have it flashed and it was saying there was all kinds of sensors that were bad and not functioning right so just because you get the computer from the dealer doesnt mean anything these vehicles were not built well lots of electrical problems no can seem to figure out and if you are burning alot of oil its more than likely the gasket some retard designer at dodge put on the bottom of the in take when it goes out it suck all the oil out of motor and the blows up if you can afford it buy the only after market they sell for the 5.2 and 5.9 motors its 600 dollars but gets ride of that potential devastating problem and just so you know i completely rebuilt motor everything from pistons to crank bearings and check ebay for parts i got the same parts same part number for a fraction of price if you can wait a day or two will save you tons of money
No bus does not automatically mean the computer is the issue. No bus can be caused by many things, most commonly it is either a short in a wire or a sensor that is pulling down the five volt reference that the computer delivers to the sensors in a given circuit. It can be tricky to diagnose but is definitely possible. Find the five volt reference and back probe from any sensor on that circuit. If you don't have five volts, unplug sensors one at a time until the five volts returns. Super common on dodge vehicles, seen it many times even on my own durango Trust me, I'm licensed lol
No bus means the computer is not connecting to the rest of vehicle will roll over and will not start a bad sensor should trigger check engine light code and just cause you have a license doesn't mean anything I know lots of crap mechanics that went to school and don't know there ass from a screwdriver
bdavis1102 answered 8 years ago
Same problem. Starts when it wants to and need to keep foot on gas slightly even while driving. Pain in the ass. A friend put it on his puter and after a while of checking signals, resetting, etc. finally came up with p0320 code, no crank reference. Buddy says try replacing crank sensor first. Will see what happens. Mine is a 2000 Durango.

I own a 2002 Dakota sport 4.7 I've been having starting and dying while driving issues for the last couple of weeks. Sometimes it will start right up and die while at idle and sometimes it won't die until I take it for a drive. Noticed that when it died the "check gage" light came on and my fuel was reading empty even tho I had a half tank. Waited over night then it started right up. Figured it was the fuel pump so I replaced that along with the crankshaft sensor. It started up and I drove it like 15min with no problems. Then the next day went to start it and it wouldn't?! Fuel was reading empty again too. Then after a few hours. It started up and fuel was reading half full. Not too sure what the problem could be? Was thinking the ASD/ASR relay or the fuel pump relay? Any suggestions would he greatly appreciated! Just wanna drive my truck again lol
Are you getting spark when it quits running
Nismo1JZS13 answered 8 years ago
Yea.. I just bought a fuel cut off relay. Which is the same as a ASD relay... Thinking that might be the cause. What you think?
bdavis1102 answered 8 years ago
Nismo, You replaced the crank sensor and it didn't help? That's depressing. That was my next shot. Seems like everything we do corrects the problem for less than an hour. I did the Mass air flow sensor first, and that worked for a little while. Wtf? Think Dodge's are built in the twilight zone!
Nismo1JZS13 answered 8 years ago
Yea no doubt bdavis! I replaced the ASD relay last night and still no luck :/ so my next thing I'm gonna replace is gonna be the fuel pump relay and see if that does the trick?! Haha this truck is starting to turn into a nightmare!... Why I usually stick to JDM cars haha
bdavis1102 answered 8 years ago
Unbelievable that no one can figure this out Nismo. Am going to change the crank sensor anyway, just because it is coming up no crank reference on puter. It's not too expensive or hard to do. I will keep you informed. You should really take it to Autozone or somewhere that will put it on a puter for you without charging you. It takes a little digging even with the puter. If who is using it really doesn't know what their doing, that too is a waste of time. Keep in touch, so will I.

99 Durango, first thing I can tell you all is that if your engine is idling rough then it's time you replaced the cam sensor, believe me I have a crank problem and have replaced all sensors and had the engine purring, after that I notice water seeping from my timing cover so I replaced the gasket and put everything back correctly now get this once I finished that project lol the engine would start but no idle so a new cool pack and distributor cap and pos sensor, still nothing good but I did find that this is a firing problem and I'm willing to bet that one of those stupid little wires going to the ecm is the culprit, but I'm almost there so please you should trust me on this , stop throwing monies into parts that this vehicle doesn't need also really listen for the sound of your fuel pump if you hear it then your relays aren't bad and your fuel pump is ok. It's a firing problem for sure. Once I find it I'll keep you all informed
Sour 2000 durango. Would not start or die. On my snapon brick it wouls give a ASR relay problem. I have not had the problem for a while. Here is the key item. This would only happen when fuel level at or below 1/4 tank. When it wouldnt run i would switch positions of the relays with the fuel pump relay. Viola it would start. From my limited knowledge the in tank pumps are cooled by fuel. We have not let the fuel go below 3/8 of a tank and have not had any problem. As soon as i can find the time to change the pump weill find out. Again if i had the time i would do an amp draw test on the pump and confirm my speculations
bdavis1102 answered 8 years ago
Thanks Durrangoman. Please do stay in touch. Looking forward to your findings.

So first all so many people get crankshaft and cam shaft missed up a lot get a po340 code but change out the crank sensor but it's the cam sensors not crank hope this helps
My 2005 used to start and would die at idle, before anyone does anything always clean your throttle body. My issie was a dirty throttle body and hasn't done it since. TPS Throttle position sensor can cause some of your issues as well.
Hi. Im having the same start problem and tought its the crank or the cam sensor, mostly cas of the descriptions abowe here. I havent changed anything yet, cos i wasent satisfied with the answers. So i googeld it more and came pased this link : https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LBidYWzFY1s Conclution, this is the first im going to do, and i belive this will help others to. Bear Norway.
My 2002 durango won't start. It ran fine when it was parked (had to be jumped started due dead battery), I replaced the battery (bought a value power with 550 cranking amps). Would that battery be strong enough to start the Durango? It cranks but won't start. Gauges don't move either.
I'm having the same problem I'm getting spark frim the ignition coil to the distributor but no spark from the distributor to the spark plugs
@Guru my mechanic said that my Durango isn't getting a spark to the spark plug so we are replacing the ignition coil. Hopefully that helps you a little bit
Have change the cap and rotor check to make sure there are no cracks ohm test wires
@Matthew who is that too?

ok mso i have a 1998 dodge durango with a jeep cher.... moter in it it started dying an cutting out an acting like it wasnt getting gas but now it sometimes wont even turn over or start an im not sure if i need to replace the vacumm lines or im doing something wrong but it wont even start up 2 sec it just putts an dies like its not getting gas an i just replaced the fuel pump in it can someone plz help me
I have a 2001 Dodge Durango and was having starting issues. I replaced the crankshaft sensor, the distributor pickup coil and the ASD relay and still nothing then i followed the steps on this link on testing the ignition coil . http://troubleshootmyvehicle.com/chrysler/3.9L-5.2L-5.9L/how-to-test-the-ignition-coil-1#2 and low and behold that was the problem.
I have just installed a long block 318 on my 2000 Durango. I have fuel, air and spark but wont start so must be timing. Any one know a great way to set the engine timing since I did reuse the old distributor so it may be off a gear?
My 2003 Durango shut down completely. Does not crank at all. No power, doesn't even lock doors. NOTHING works. What does this mean? This has never happened before.
also 8 spark plugs or coil packs ALL do not just go out at once, neither do multiple relays at the same time considering everyone truck was running the night before or runs for a few hours then does same result. I think there is a serious electrical issue or something involved not many people have discovered other than the auto shops or dealers.
For anyone that needs to know and you dont you can check your own codes my turning the ignition on and off three times and looking in the mileage window. Check YouTube for clearing codes and other info on fixing your vehicles.
Okay so I have a 2004 Durango 4.7 cranks but won’t start I replaced the crank and cam sensor and the IAC valve cranks but won’t start but if you put your foot the floor and crank it it runs very little but doesn’t start up what is my problem it sounds like a timing issue to me, but need a definite answer.
So i have a 04 4.7 v8 i was driving it down the highway when i all of a sudden started to lose power, gave it some gas and just nothing. Pulled over on the side of the road, let it idle to see what was up, the car slightly began to vibrate. I turned it off and tried to start it up again and it would not start up. if it does it'll only run for half a second and then dies out. I'm thinking its gotta be a coil(s). If anyone could help to confirm this would be nice.. Thanks!!!
OK GUYS I HAVE THE SAME PROBLEM AS EVERYBODY ELSE IN A NUT SHELL I'M GOING TO TELL WHAT I THINK IT IS ,THE CAR IS NOT READING THE KEY SO I GOT ANOTHER KEY CUT WORKS JUST FINE.FEEL FREE TO CALL ME WITH QUESTIONS 803/348/8729
My 99 durango is doing the same thing. Had cut off cat. converter a week before I had started it at least 3 time with in that week. Got in started right up, ran for couple of minutes. Turned it off. Got underneath it put new cat on clamped it down. Got back in truck and it would not start. Next day took cat back off and still won't start. Has fuel, turns over just won't start. It sounds strong and sounds like it wants to start just doesn't.
