2013 Nissan Altima, 1in of water on drivers front and rear floor boards?

Asked by migration_kmedgecomb... May 15, 2014 at 01:59 PM about the 2013 Nissan Altima 2.5 SL

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

I live in Shreveport, LA. We have recently had some heavy rain the past few days and my 2013 Altima SL which is always garaged, but has been in the driveway the past couple days during the recent rainstorms.  I found over 1in of water on the rear driver side floor board and the carpeting was wet on the front drivers side.  My windows were not open, no water leaking from sunroof and no water was found on seats. ONLY on the floorboard.  By coincidence I also had my windsheild replaced the same day and they found a 6in gap on the passenger side where there was no sealant.  It was the original windsheild that was factory installed, so I'm guessing mine wasn't the only one!  Has anyone else had this issue? I'm going to the dealer in a few days to fix the airbag (which didn't detect me sitting in the passenger seat, but will detect my purse) due to the recall.  They are going to check out this other issue but I like to see if anyone else has this problem.

Live in Ajax, Ontario 2013 Altima SV. Most of the water was in the rear passenger side and some in the front passenger, overall about 3 gallons sucked up, its funny I could hear sloshing noises and I thought it was my gas tank which was half full, I was surprised because I never heard the gas before and now I know why. I have a sunroof , but there are no trail signs, I don't know how it got in.

If your 2013 Altima is leaking call 1- 800-Nissan1 and wait till last option to talk with a rep. They have a buy back option for this problem! Everyone needs to report problem so more can be done!

I just bought a 2014 Altima back in June and I have found my rear & front passenger side floor soaked. I took it in once and the service department claimed that it was a hose that was loose but the problem is still there. What can I do? I paid a lot of money to have a defected vehicle.

I had a sloshing noise coming from the back passenger of my 2010 Altima. I found the rear passenger door full of water. The seal was stuck over the drain hole. I pulled it away and about two gallons of water drained out.

Did anyone ever find out the answer to this? I have a 2013 Nissan Altima and I am also having major water issue with my rear and drivers floorboards.

It took almost two months to figure it out but it ended up being a missing seal on the drivers side kick plate. After having replaced the seal and the carpet I haven't had the issue since. I also got Nissan to extended the warranty on my electrical system since I have noticed a few glitches and also had a 8in gap in the seal on the factory i stalled windshield. Corrosion takes a while to become a problem. I have left my car out in a few rain showers just to make sure it was fixed too!

BTW my dealership actually replaced the same seal twice before it was finally fixed too. That seal was completely missed when the car was built, so I knew I wasn't the only one that had this problem!

I have a 2013 Altima. Bought it new. I am having similar issues. My front and rear driver side floor boards get soaked with rain. Not to mention the smell of mildew to go with it! I am taking it to the dealership. .I just hope they don't give me a hard time about fixing it.

It ended up being a missing seal that was never put in when the car was manufactured. When you take it in make sure you tell them that you smell and see mold in the carpet. That was the only way that they will replace the carpet and padding for free.

I purchased my Nissan Altima from CarMax and noticed too that the floorboard in the back behind the driver being filled up with water when it rained yesterday. I thought it smelled mildewed. I call Nissan Corp and they told me to take it to the dealership which I plan to do today I want it fixed permenantly or I want it bought back!

This just happened to me. Turns out there were two leaks in the body of the vehicle allowing water inside the cabin. $850+ (out of warranty) later and my car is sealed up and dry. Good to take care of before the water starts to rust out the car ...

Nissan covered mine for free because the seal was a factory defect. I hope you push to get your money back from them even though you were out of warrranty

JK, I've submitted a claim with Nissan USA. What kind of timeline can I expect?

9 people found this helpful.

Well they didn't charge me from the beginning so I don't know what the timing would be. They admitted to me that the seal was a factory defect so you should tell them that they have not charged others for the same issue.

The fix for my vehicle was free and I got a rental that they paid for while it was being repaired. I recommend leaving the car out in any future rain storm so you know it's fixed right. I took my shop three times to finally get it right. New carpet each time too. As far as the warranty goes I would call Nissan USA and get them to refund you. A manufacturer defect should not apply to a warranty. Especially if you live u n an area where it doesn't rain often or you garage your vehicle. How would you have possibly known about this since they never did a recall for a known issue? I fought with Nissan and got them to extend my warranty after this issue. Also this issue started BEFORE your warranty was up. :-)

Nissan has agreed to cover the costs of the repair since the car is only two years old.

I've got the same problem of water soaking the rear driver side floor board in my 2013 Altima. I first brought it to my service dept attention when it had 4,000 miles. They could not find the leak. I recently brought it again for the same problem and of course it is out of warranty now. Service tech found the leak at a body seam and has sealed it. Last month I called Nissan usa and was given a claim number. I'm now waiting for the consumer affairs rep to call my service dept to see about the cost of diagnosis and repair.

I'm having the same flooding problem when it rains on my 2013 Altima. Just took it to the dealer for the second time today and they said it was coming from the windshield which would have to be resealed for $400. It's not covered under warranty and they said it was normal wear and tear on the vehicle and I would have to pay. I see this is a common complaint but Nissan hasn't done any recalls on it so I am also going to call and open a claim with them. Thanks from for the info everyone that posted.

Wow, gigi_31, you could get a new windshield for that price! It has to be the seal, which I'm sure you could argue us a manufacturer defect. Try going to a different dealer in the meantime to see what they say. Good luck!

I have the same issue on 2013 Nissan Altima. The car has had a terrible smell whenever I got in. So I decided to clean all the mattresses and dried up. But it hasn't solved. I called the local Nissan service center when I found my passenger floorboard was soaked, the guy said I have to pay everything including checkup of the issue because of the warranty is over. It makes me so disappointed at Niissan. I am waiting for the checkup this coming Tuesday. I will tell you how Nissan deal with this issues.

Louis. I have a 2014 Altima SL my floor board was flooded in the back right passenger side that ran to front. My warranty had ended 6 months ago . I knew a mechanic he checked it out &'it was my Sun Roof tubes were clogged , he compressed it cleaned it out. He lifted my rug still airing it out . But now we r getting a storm tonight and Saturday. This will be the big test. Keeping my fingers crossed that we got it solved . So far my rugs don't smell nothing rusted . But I'm pissed with nissan I paid a lot of money for this car should I report it .? Even if I went to my own mechanic . I only paid $300 with my private mechanic he is the best I was so upset crying he said don't worry we will fix it .

I've just in the past week or two noticed water coming in to my car because it's been dripping on my left foot while I'm driving after rain or just heavy dew. It's funny that you guys are mentioning a smell because I've deep cleaned the inside of my car a few times this month because I was frustrated with the smell in my car. I have 2015 Altima. Anyone having any luck talking to Nissan? I'm not a huge fan of my dealer because of their diagnostic charges, wondering if people have been having luck with warranty coverage?

I am having the same issue with my 2013 Altima, my carpets are soaking wet. Front, back and on both sides. i took my car to the service center September 27th. They said my drains coming from my sunroof were clogged. they unclogged them. Today less than 2 weeks later, October 9th 2017. My carpets are soaked again!!! My husband and I are very frustrated, especially after reading all this. I have contacted my extended warranty provider. Of course they do not cover water leaks.I also contacted Nissan. They did create a case if it is diagnosed to be a manufacturing issue. I really like my car, however, I believe I will trade my car off.

GuruZDTGH, yes. I posted the original question to this thread. It ended up being a missing seal on the driver's side kick plate. It took the shop sealing it twice for it to actually work. About two years later I traded in the car. I will never buy Nissan again, that's for sure!

I am having the same problem with my 2013 Altima SL. Took it to the dealership last week. Was told it would cost 1100.00 to pull off the windshields and clean the drains. There is water holding somewhere as there is condensation inside the windows every night. Checked all the exterior drains today and used a 1/4 inch wide by 24 inch long zip tie to clear the leaves from under the rear windshield. I also park under a tree.

I was having the same leak on my driver's side front and back floorboards. After taking to the dealership twice, calling corporate (who didn't give me a resolution), and taking it back a third time, it seams that they found the issue. There was a gap from the factory under my windshield. Crazy thing, I asked on several occasions if this had been checked and was told that it had and they couldn't replicate the problems I was having. Needless to say, I was furious about the leak and especially after being told this problem was checked previously. In reality, it really depends on the person/people you speak with at the dealership.Talk to the boss and hopefully he/she will have their best person check it out.

HELP...I, too, have a 2013 Nissan Altima 2.5v with that same leaking issues. I actually felt the drip this morning but it has been happening for about a year now since my car stinks of mold!! Reading through all these responses it can be attributed to: 1. seal on the windshield which some have said is a manufacturers defect. 2. missing seal on driver's side kick plate. So...If this is a manufacturers defect, does one have to pay for it? Would a replacement windshield solve the problem? Thanks everyone!

I took my car to the dealership Thursday to get recall and oil changed. Thursday night I noticed my floorboard behind drivers seat filled with water. I have had this car almost 3 years and out of warranty.

Mine is a 2008 Nissan Altima that I bought from an individual little over year ago and have noticed my driver's side floor board wet and slightly damp in the other floor board. I have also noticed water standing in the driver's side floorboard after a heavy rain. If so many are complaining about this, why haven't they done a recal?

I have same issue with my 2013 altima. Drivers side front and rear floor board is flooded after heavy rain. Have had it at dealership 3 times now. They can not figure out why my car is taking in water. Nissan states they have not heard of this issue. I call BS. I am tired of my car smelling like mildew and flooding very time we get heavy rain. Nissan needs to step up and fix the issue.

Yup.. Me too. After being told by Nissan they won't help me, I got rid of my Nissan and will never buy another. Hate hate hate Nissan. They have proven time and time again that they DO NOT Stand by their product.

I had some problem with my 2008 nissan altima coupe. took it to dealer and have been told the sunroof was clogged then cleaned, but still have flooded rear floor board. Did one find solution or nissan pay for this kind of problem ?

My ‘14 with less then 30k is experience the same problem. I can see the water dripping from under the dashboard onto the driver’s and passenger’s side floor. I’ve removed the plastic at the bottom of the windshield and cleaned the dirt and opened up the drain holes. That didn’t help. Water is still getting in somewhere.

Update on my 2013 Altima. I decided to have a local auto glass company replace the windshield after i saw water under the glass in the Vin # area. Since having the windshield replaced it has rained, and no more water is coming in! The windshield i had on there was not factory, but the installer noted that areas on the driver side of the windshield looked to be thin on the seal.

Has anyone definitively figured out what is causing this. I bought my car used, 2015 Altima SL 21000 miles in May 2018. Heavy rain leaks in. I've tried spraying my car with the hose to simulate rain, but can't seem to reproduce. I have a video of the car leaking on the passenger side underneath the glove box. Took the whole thing apart, still, no luck. I thought it was just the pass side front, but I felt the rear pass this morning (heavy rainsyesterday, too), that was soaked too.

20

August 2018 I have a 2013 NIssan Altima and just had the same problem many of you are describing with water on the floor on the driver side front and back. Took it to Nissan dealership and they said the problem was the sunroof drainage tube blockage. They told me the tubes had to be replaced, the carpet replaced and some ozone treatment to prevent molding. Approximate cost $2400. The service manager did suggest calling my insurance company to see if this was covered under comprehensive coverage. Thankfully it is, but I still have to pay to replace the tubes and a $500 deductible. Still it's less than paying all of the bill, but my big concern is will this happen again? How many times will car insurance pay for this. I will get this fixed, however I will consider trading this in for another car without a sunroof.

Hi, I bought a 2013 Nissan Altima last month had the similar problem. It rained yesterday, was driving back to home and there was small amount of water on road while crossing it started leaking from the floorboard of driver side. Was not sure amd could not find the problem beacause it was dark. Today morning I had a look into it and found the water leaked from the steering rod which is right next to the break pedal. Does any one faced this problem before and can I know do dealer can fix this problem with charging me because I don’t have the factory warranty. I am uploading picture of it, please have a look and suggest me, how can I fix this.

Wow, so many consumers all with almost the same problems almost. My passenger front and rear both sides in back keep getting wet. I did watch a couple of videos on You tube which show drain tubes (4) of them related to the sun roof, and how they clog, and how to unclog them. I think there are multiple drain tubes on all cars, and my thoughts are if any of them clog, water backs up, and then finds it's way in pretty much where ever it can. Going to try the things shown in video and see if that helps. Curious if anyone has lifted their carpets to see underneath them, and if so are they easily lifted, and can you easily put them back? Good luck everyone here.

Hi all, i had commented previously about having water leak from both driver and passenger footrest area. I've been trying to fix them problem since then...and the problem is the sunroof drain connectors specifically the part (74816-ju40b) that connects the end of the drain tube to the firewall of the car so the water exits. The water doesn't exit correctly and actually seeps back in through a mini gap within that part back inside the fire wall. You actually need to take out that part and attach a little tube through the hole so the water exits correctly. There are videos online showing this..search for infiniti sunroof leak fix. I have attached a picture of the part. To be honest it was a pain in the neck to remove both parts to fix them especially the driver side which i fixed today. I will update you guys after it rains.

This sounds like a definite manufacturing problem. I have a 2015Rogue that’s Ive had for about 10 months. I am getting water in my car as well. Not sure how long it’s been going on. I noticed it when I was moving my front drivers side floor mat. It was soaked. I looked in the back. It was dry but I noticed a water stain around the mat. Today I went to the car wash and my entire back floor was wet. There was also a faint mildew smell. I plan to go to the dealership in the morning. I’ve pretty much always had Nissan vehicles. This is the 2nd Nissan vehicle to have do this. Before getting my current vehicle I had a 2012 Altima. I had that car about 1- 1/2 before moving out of state. That first 1–1/2 years I never noticed the floor being wet. About 4 months after being in my new state I was driving one day when I went to put something in the back seat and the back passenger side floor had a puddle. It had rained really hard the day before so I thought maybe rain got in despite the seats, ceiling & doors were totally dry. Some time had passed before it happened again. During this time, I was having another weird issue with the oil leaking. That took presedenf. After multiple trips to the dealer and other mechanics no one could find the source. Someone ended up having an accident in my Altima so I never got the water issue checked. So when it happened in this vehicle and from the many people who left a comment, I’m thinking it’s a manufacturing issue.

I just got a 2009 Nissan Altima and while several problems have come up the soaking wet floors, especially the front driver's side, is the most perplexing. I'm a 68 yr old disabled person and I have to have reliable transportation. There's no leaks in/around the sunroof. AR has had an exceptional amount of rain the last few months, I've only had the car since 2/8/19, and frankly I don't know what to do or where to start. Anything anyone can share with me would be very much appreciated!

My car is st the shop as I type and it's keeping me up st night because in this part of NY we don't get year round rain. As snow drops, you smell something like mildew. My first front seat drop came approximately 4 weeks after purchasing the 2014 Rogue brand spanking new. We were on vacation and it rained. I called immediately in the car and reported it. I still have payments & l am livid. There are far too many payninh customers with complaints about the leak, I believe it's a manufacturer issue and Nissan is fully aware of this problem. This problem is dangerous and it's not just one problem. What's troubling to me is that the licensed dealers and the corporations are fighting behind the customer's back as to who will pay for it.I hope to keep researching and I am going to keep on this serious issue. Thanks everyone. Bcp2014

I just called Nissan NorthAmerica 1-800-647-7261 Nissan has no “open file” on this issue. Recommended I get a Nissan Dealership to run a diagnostic ($150 here!!) and then send it to Nissan NorthAmerica Consumer Affairs P.O. Box 685003 Franklin TN 37068. This sounds like Nissan making owners spend money unnecessarily as there is no way they don’t know it’s a problem. I think a media blitz is required.

I just took in some water from the drivers side floorboard. Drove through about 8 inches of water due to a tropical storm. The water level isn’t a big deal for this car as I’ve driven through deeper water before without issue. However last week all of a sudden water came splashing up from the steering column area. After lifting the carpeting to let it dry I noticed that the steering column boot popped off where the column goes into the floor. The boot cover acts as a seal that keeps the water from coming in from the column opening. It is clamped down but somehow popped out, likely from me driving a little too fast in the water? Anyways hope this helps you out.

I found myself with water leaking into my 2015 Nissan Rogue for the first time about 2-3 weeks ago. So I cleared the drain pipes on my sunroof. I thought the problem was resolved. Then suddenly I noticed water in the front passenger and driver seat yesterday. Based on what others have experienced, the problem might be any or combination of the following: - the drain holes are still clogged, - broken or missing seal around the windshield, - seal missing or broken around the driver’s side kick plate, - water leaking from the steering rod - and/or the boot around the steering column popped of andi is leaking waster inside the car. Good to have this master list as I will be soon heading for diagnosis and repair. Thanks everyone.

2009 Altima, most water leaks can be traced to sunroof drains. One on each side frony and one on each side rear of opening. To verify front drains have not pulled lose from bulkhead thru body, open sunroof, locate drain hole in the corner and pour a small amount of water down drain. Should be a puddle on ground in back of front tire. If no water there check on floor below kick panel. If water is dripping inside you have to remove glove box to get to drain tube. This has been a problem since we bought the car, Nissan has never stepped up. I have to reattach drain tubes every year before rainy season. Time consuming and frustrating.

Our 2018 Versa leaks water on the left passenger side. It collects under the windshield, sloshes around, and spills into the front passenger side, usually after it rains. Push down on the carpet, and you have an inch of rainwater. It's a mold and health hazard. Its a widespread problem across North America. They are no longer sold in Europe for this reason. Time for a CLASS ACTION LAWSUIT.

I have a 2008 Nissan Altima that has been filling up with water on the driver side front and back and the passenger front. Mom has had this car under a carport until a few months ago. So I am not sure how long this has been a problem. I hope they will be good enough to fix it at no charge.

I have a 2013 Altima filled with a horrible smell due to water sitting on the driver side front and rear floor! I noticed my liner on the left trim near the door is stained and was wet as well. I can't seem to figure the true issue and this has been going for almost a year now.

We bought my son the 2013 Nissan Altima a couple of months ago. We are having this problem and they are saying that this wouldn't be covered since the warranty ran out on this car. We are currently at the Nissan dealership and waiting to hear what they say. I am going to be furious if I have to pay for something if it ends up being a manufacturer's mistake. My son's car does not have sunroof so we know that isn't the issue. Right now they say it was the air conditioning hose was backed up and not emptying out. I told them that I will monitor it. If that's all it is... great. But if this seal is missing, I am willing to call Nissan

Same problem with a 2007 altima...cleared the drains last summer and flooded again...never even opened the sunroof after I cleared all four drains...Class action suit time folks

I have a 2015 Altima and I've been noticing this issue since June of this year. Sometimes when I vacuum out all of the water, there's literal INCHES of water that comes out of the floors of my passenger side, both front and back. I'm also having recurring problems with my hood latch, which hasn't been able to be fixed since 2018. Additionally, there's some huge rubber piece that is perpetually hanging off the bottom of my car and has never been successfully remounted since 2016. Wouldn't be surprised if this thing blows up on me in the middle of the road one day.

If you have a sunroof, it might be problems with the drain pipes. If you don't have a sunroof it can be either the rubber grommet for the steering wheel, or a small hole by the driver side left foot that wasn't properly sealed.

I have a 2013 Altima that I bought new. After a heavy rainfall, my front & back floor on passenger side had a puddle of water. I have a sunroof, but never any leaks. Dealership said the sunroof drain was clogged. Service repair description on bill: Headliner removal, cleaned drains out, reinstalled. They charged me $843.97 out the door. I decided to replace carpet elsewhere, but before doing so we had another storm and this caused another huge puddle in same area. When I stop and go I can hear the water splashing somewhere under the passenger floor. Now dealership says it's a clogged AC drain. $25 to replace the drain hose and no charge for labor. This is absolutely ridiculous. I'm glad this didn't happen again after replacing the carpet. At this point, I don't trust that these repairs will hold so I think it's time to get rid of the car. No more Nissans for me.

Same issue with my 2015 Altima. Front and rear driver's side floor soaked. Mold on mat and carpet. Disgusting.

I have a 2013 Altima and a 2009 Altima both with sunroofs and they both leak water now. There's signs of moisture and water drips where the roof liner meets the A bar on the drivers side on both cars now. I've taken an air compressor and blown them out and water drips behind the front wheel but when it rains it still leaks water and ends up drenching the floor. I more than likely will never buy another Nissan and I've had quite a few of them.
