Finding a water leak 2013 Altima
Asked by ants01 Dec 21, 2014 at 08:29 PM about the 2013 Nissan Altima 2.5 SL
Question type: Maintenance & Repair
Hey guys I have a problem with my 2013 Altima , the passenger rear carpet gets soaked
every time it rains. I've inspected the drainage points on the sunroof but all seems clear.
When I looked under the car there is water dripping from the channel directly under the
passenger carpet area. Is there maybe a drainage point that could be blocked up . I've
also taken the rear seat out to see where the water is coming from and to dry the carpet.

Just checked the drain holes on the doors and they are clear
Check the trunk ... it may be getting in through the rubber weather seal

The water usually comes in from a seam at the firewall that wasn't sealed properly at the factory. You don't see it on the front carpet because it goes under the styrofoam that is on the floor board.
any pics of location of seam that is leaking?
here is the location of my leak

Im now getting water in on the passenger side floor also. This is way too common for Nissan not to cover. I called the local Nissan and they guy told me it would be 1200 just to check for leak.
I have had my vehicle 3 years out of warranty and Thursday night my floorboard was filled with water.
I been hearing my cooling fan running and i been seeing water coming from car what is the problem on my2915 Altima
My 2013 Altima had water sloshing around in the back seat floor after a heavy rain and carpet wet in the front. Took car to Nissan Dealer and all drains were flushed and rinsed but next rain same thing so I took it back. It was found after the front fender was removed a seam in the frame was leaking water. All seams were sealed by Nissan and problem solved. The bill for labor was $1300.I felt that Nissan should cover the cost since I feel this was a manufacturing problem and told them so. So far I have not heard anything from Nissan Corp. I don't think I will be purchasing another Nissan product.. Dealership and customer service said they had never heard of the problem which is hard to believe since so many people on the internet are complaining about the same problem .Bob

Found the leak on my girlfriend's 2013 Altima SL. Just posting this on here hopefully it helps someone else. There is a boot on the steering shaft that was out of place. If you go through a big puddle water goes in through the firewall into the cab. Water ended up everywhere, especially on the driver side rear footwell. Reinstalled the steering boot. Its held down by a clamp and two bolts that sorround the perimeter of the boot. I am no engineer, but it looks to be a bad design. The boot fits loosely even with the bolts tight. The rubber boot just has a thin ,foam backing as a gasket, used more for holding air on plastic vents, not for keeping water out of your car. I will have to make a a ring ,with some abs plastic so it can really tighten down on the rubber boot, unless they came up with a better design. See pictures EXTRA READING In 2017 My girlfriend took in the 2013 Altima to our local dealership after there was a lot of water in the rear of the driver seat passenger side. They said it was a door seal on the driverside rear passenger door had worn out. I did not believe this claim because the car was only 4 years old, the seals looked perfect on all doors. My girlfriend was freaked out about having mold, so she went ahead with the repair cause they were going to dry the carpet. Cost 190 for the so called repair, it hardly rains out here in California so fast forward to 2019. The car gets full of water again after hard rains and going over large puddles. She called the dealer and they said that the last time it was repaired was for the passenger side, not the driver side rear. 130 dollars to check it. This was not the first time Nissan dealer lied to us. I no longer trust the Nissan dealer. I did not want to pay for a repair that was not going to work again and we cant find out if it works till there is hard rain again. Now I have questions , was this boot not installed correctly from factory when it was built ,or it just a bad design ? Was this boot pushed out of place with water if you go through a deep puddle of water at a good speed? Or was this boot pushed out by a service technician to get extra service points? We will never know. I will secure this boot so it won't come off so easily.

Leadtech398, I have been having the same problem. I started finding water pooled in the back driver side floor. So much that when I pulled the carpet mat out, water just ran out of it. I also noticed that the driver side mat is now soaked. If it's coming from underneath the car, how is the mat getting wet too? I can see it seeping from the front to the back, cut how can it go through the rubber side of the mat? I can find no visible signs of a water leak on either door, the sun roof, the ceiling or anywhere. I thought it was the windshield that I had replaced, so I took it back to the glass shop and they didn't even check...they just replaced it. Now, the leak seems worse. I'm stumped and tired of wet carpet. Any ideas?
I eventually found the leak by pressure washing the undercarriage while sitting inside. I found the water was coming in the the rubber boot on the steering column. i see someone else found the problem in the above post.

GuruCHKKK , Does your car stay parked outside? If so it can be the drains for the sun roof are clogged or the drain hose out of place. There is styrofoam underneath the driver side, and all the water travels to the back where it puddles. Check the boot I mention on my previous post, it's a bad design so if you go through a large puddles lots of water enters the cabin. Best thing to do is pull the interior carpet and pressure wash the undercarriage as a last resort, do the easy checks first.
Water pooling in back seat foot well. Finally found the leak. 1st flushed all drains didn't correct the problem. 2nd took it back to Nissan and they took the front right fender and wheel off and found where the water was coming in. All seams in the firewall had to be sealed and problem solved $1300 later. Think it is a manufacturing problem although Nissan didn't offer any help even though I requested it from head office in Canada.
Hey cuda1970, what part of the car is that a photo of?
The driver side back seat has been wet a few times I don't have a sun roof, what would cause that

Seems like the most common problem is seam sealer was not applied correctly at the factory. Or the boot that goes around the steering column is letting water in when going through heavy puddles.
Hi Ant01. I have the same problem but I don't feel any wet anywhere but the back passenger side floor. How would the water get from the drivers side front to the back passenger side floor without getting any of the other carpets wet? Was it clear the rubber boot on the steering column wasn't installed properly? Thanks

Most of the floor is made up of styrofoam blocks. So the carpet is above the floor. Most of the water ends up at the foot well in the back of the driver side, where the passenger would sit behind the driver. What side are you getting water on?
I also had the same issue of water leaking on passenger side and rear floor mats getting soaking water. I did unclip the rear carpet in the rear and could see water flowing from from to back while driving in medium to heavy rain. I stumbled across this thread and my problem was due to seam seal not set correctly at factory. Steps to identify and fix 1) On the front door there will be plastic mouldings along the bottom everything is held by plastic so you can gently prie out 2) lift the carpet in front you will see a metal plate with multiple bolts in front pics 3) if you see the pick on the corner there is a small hole where the seam sealer is missing Here is what I did to fix mine tools needed: primer , seam sealer, brake , metal brush, gloves , caulking gun 1) apply brake cleaner and scrub the par were seam sealer is missing with metal brush 2) once you see the metal - wipe clean and apply primer 3) Use seam sealer to re seal 4) let it dry over night
Metal plate mentioned above. have to post multiple times as only one pic can be attached at a time
Closer shot of the hole. Hope this helps. I used this sealer from advance auto parts. Dynatron Auto Seam Sealer Grey Caulk, 12 oz
My 2010 Held water in the door pass rear the worst you could shake the door and hear it.. Dealer said check drain vents, that let out a little bit Drilled a hole outside the door seal and water flooded out did the other three the same way my wife hasn't heard the issue sense.
Hi everyone - I was able to get a video of a leak on my car during a storm. I have no clue what the actual source is. This is the bottom of the front passenger door on my 2013 Nissan Altima SL. https://photos.app.goo.gl/Qkdr4PMJhPER25du5

found the problem, the passenger drain tube connects to a barb fitting on the firewall behind the glove box, yes the drain is clear but if u watch the barb fitting it will leak when you pour water on the sunroof because the tube that connects to it get swollen, fixed it with a 20c hose clamp. no more leaks
@GuruDTCMP5 Did you have to remove the clover box to access the tube and fitting?... assuming the tube is on the firewall inside the cabin.
