Gripes and question about working on my own car
First, the gripe. I have been working on my own car
for the past 11 years and I have never seen a setup
like my '13 Nissan Altima. First, the filter is in an
awkward place above a bar of a frame and the oil
leaks out on the bar and then drops into my oil pan,
but first I also have to maneuver around a plaster
cover that can't be removed and scrapes at my
arm. Also, I have never had to go under a car to
change the lights. Either the designer of this car
was about to quit and this was his way of getting
back at "the man" or this was done on purpose in
an attempt to force people to bring their car to the
expensive Nissan dealership. If it's the latter, I'm
holding out. Usually my biggest concern when
working on my car is not breaking a nail but now
my biggest concern is getting around the car so I
can work on the car.
My last gripe is also my question. I was changing
my rear brakes and rotors today, along with my oil
which was uneventful except for the filter bar issue
I mentioned above. Things went well with my rear
passenger brakes and rotors, but the rear driver
rotor was quite an issue. As you can see in my
picture below, thanks to the bar to the right I am
unable to get my socket all the way on the nut and
I also don't have the clearance needed to get
enough leverage even if I could get the socket all
the way on. I got the caliper lid all the way off, and I
got the nut off of the bottom caliper bracket but
that top nut is giving me the issues I just
described. Usually it's my rotors being rushed on
that cause me heartache, but this is the first time
that I had to stop because of these issues. Even if I
tried a breaker bar I still can't get the socket all the
way on the nut.
Now that I've exhaled (aah) do anyone have any
suggestions about what I can do (other than by a
new car)?
