I had my 2012 Sonata GLS for over 50K miles when I sold it and I don't remember the Check Engine light coming on at any time. It's not a maintenance reminder light, so it doesn't come on at various mileage intervals. As the other member said above, it comes on to indicate that the car's computer has detected a problem. Use an OBD II code reader (available at Walmart or auto parts stores) to scan for trouble codes, or take the car to a mechanic to do it for you. Some auto parts stores may do this for you for free.
