2013 Hyundai Sonata - Passed Engine Recall Test - Now Engine is Stalling

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

I have a 2013 Hyundai Sonata with about 88k miles on it. I took it in for the
engine recall in December of 2017. They said it passed. I was a little worried
because my mom has the same car, same year and hers failed and she
needed the engine replaced. Today while driving the engine just stalled. No
noise, and there were no lights on prior to it stalling. Luckily I was able to pull
over. I turned the car off for about a minute and turned it back on and it
started running again. I was almost home so I kept going and the same thing
happened. Turned the car off and on and it started running again. I was able
to get home and I drove up a few hills and around the block to see if it would
happen again but it didn't. Sat in the car for a bit with it running to see what
would happen but it seem ok. But now I'm hesitant to drive it. Has anyone
else had this problem? Should I take it back to the dealer and ask them to re-
test it? I feel like they're going to blow me off since it already "passed." I
originally bought the car used with about 12k miles on it and I believe the
warranty with pre-owned cars runs out at 60k.

Warr ext under class action for used owners too. Now 10yrs 120k for powertrain. Mine just seized 2 days ago at 85k getting replaced. Told some hyundai dealers replacing over 120k miles and not always on vin recall list. Said have to cover ALL engines under 120k subjective over 120k...maybe try diff dealer or if not close bring up to existing dealer?

Just saw u said 88k.... Definitely call dealer. Also look under "hyundaiforum" site. That's where i saw info about all engines. My vin was in the orig recall, never got notice nor had any other issues besides new starter 1yr ago. Around 5-6k to get new engine. Worth fighting for

You won't have to fight with them they will fix this Hyundai is standing behind all their engines on all the sonatas if you are having an engine problem you will get a new engine it is dangerous for your car to stall they will fix that

Wow, I totally forgot I posted this. BUT over the holidays (Nov 2019) I was driving from Northern California to Los Angeles to visit my family. Got to the Grapevine which is about 80 miles outside of LA, and the car suddenly sputtered and stopped on the freeway. I was going uphill and this is a very busy freeway. Super dangerous to stop here especially as people are speeding and rushing to get home for thanksgiving. A little earlier in the drive I started hearing noises and something told me to stay to the right next to the shoulder. Luckily I followed my gut and I threw on my hazards and was able to ease off to the shoulder and roll down the closest exit. It was snowing and I had to wait 2 hours in the snow for AAA. Long story short I towed it to a local mechanic and he inspected it. Catastrophic engine failure. Decided to tow it to Hyundai to see what they said and they immediately said they would replace the engine. They had one engine in stock and were able to complete the work next day. So that was great, but I’m pissed that they initially said nothing was wrong with it although I’ve suspected there was this whole time.

My car stalled on I 75 outside of Atlanta with all the traffic going about 85 mph around us luckily I got to the side of the highway called AAA and got towed to the nearest Hyundai dealership who gave us a loaner so we could continue on with our vacation to the mountains, contacted Hyundai got the engine replaced and had it towed back to Tampa Florida all on Hyundai,
