Question type: Maintenance & Repair

My gear shift locked, I couldn't get it out of park. Then all of a sudden my shifter poped and now the handle moves loosly but it won't put the car in gear. I have had no previous trouble with the transmission in fact it drove fine all that day until the shifter handle locked. The vehicle starts up still but I just cant drive her. Where abouts in the mechanism of the gear shift handle is the issue?

I'm stating the obvious here, but do you have your foot on the brake when you try to move the gearshift? I had this problem with my Sebring and it took me a week to figure out why it would go into gear one day and not the next. and on my 1997 Venture the gearshift sometimes won't move sometimes unless I move the steering wheel. Other than that you will have to look under the hood and see if the linkage is hung up or broken somewhere.
