Suburban retractable running boards

How do raise the running boards on my suburban once I get out?  Should
they go up automatically.

I would start by checking the fuse ( should be listed in the owners manual the size and location. If that checks out as good try checking the door switch itself as it could be damaged or malfuctioning.
