If it got that hot then the engine needs replaced, when they get really hot the block turns blue and all the tempering is lost, so even if you did rebuild the engine it wouldn’t last long before it would be burning oil like crazy.

What would you replace it with a 20 year old used engine ? A crate engine ain't cheap , how much do you want to spend on a 22 year old dodge truck ?

Thanks for that . I have a line on a rebuild from a Dakota. Can’t afford a crate motor so it’s looking like the rebuilt is going to be the winner . My Durango is in excellent condition, no accidents, dents , perfect interior & 0 scratches . Really can’t see scrapping it .
I think your cheapest way is to find a used engine with a warranty, there are some out there but it is a parts only warranty so your out labor if it goes bad.
Plus you also have to realize you have to disconnect or move out of the way things that have not been touched since the vehicle was built, 22 years ago. Wiring harnesses, air conditioning components, power steering components, etc. all have to be moved out of the way. Wiring and hoses become stiff and brittle with age. Things will break and not go back together right. Replacing the engine at this juncture is asking for neverending trouble. In my opinion you'd be better off spending your hard earned money on something newer. Jim
