Dodge Durango Liftgate Struts replaced now big gap and won't close

Asked by Lee Sep 16, 2011 at 02:13 PM about the 2000 Dodge Durango SLT 4WD

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

This is on my 2000 Dodge Durango SLT 5.9.

One of the struts was stuck so I tried some oil and pulled up.  Did not work.  I
removed the strut and replaced it with a new one.  Now there is a fairly large gap
and the rear hatch / liftgate will not line up and close.

Do you think the hinges were bent?  Any ideas on where to go from here?

Sounds like the old shock was not the problem with the misalignment of the rear hatch. Most likely a curb bump or if you have taken the vehicle off road a tweak frame. Your local body shop should have a frame rack and can run a couple hundred bucks to measure it. Your best option without spending the piggybank money is to tweak the rear hatch to now fit the frame.
