Lots of things but it sounds like you might have a head gasket issue...blown. Lots of possibilities to overheating. Stuck thermostat, old coolant, low coolant, wrong mixture of coolant, fans not working, a leak, bad cap, bad pcm not turning fans on, bad coolant temperature sensor, old hoses, blown head gasket, faulty water pump, blown fuse or relay for fans, wiring issue on anything electrical with system, mixed 2 different colors of coolants, clogged radiator, old radiator that does not dispel heat, using tap water instead of distilled water. So as you can see you start with a pressure test on the system.
