Wife had to brake hard to avoid an accident, now pedal is "soft" and brake travels much further

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

So the wife was cut off on the road and had to brake hard to avoid an
accident. Now, the pedal is "soft" and travels much further than before. I've
checked under the hood and checked the brake fluid level and it looks low to
me, but I don't see any leaks around the master cylinder, but I do see a very
small amount of (possibly) brake fluid underneath the car, not quite dripping
off but visible. I'm thinking she might have popped a seal or something but I
just don't know enough about brakes to know for sure.

It's possible that air that has been trapped in the ABS module has been forced into the line, since this may well be the first time you've activated the ABS since the last time it was serviced. If you had blown out a line or hose, you'd have no brakes at all. Take it in and have brakes serviced with attention paid to the ABS module. A GM Tech II procedure is used to bleed the ABS module, if that wasn't done last time brakes were serviced then that's likely where trapped air came from.
