Why does my vehicle chug when I turn the AC on?

2013 Dodge Journey 39,000 miles. Turn the AC on
it chugs and the emissions light turns on. After a
few times of driving it w/o the AC the light shuts off.

The AC pump places a load on the engine displaying any weakness. Have it scanned for DTC codes before changing ANY parts.
