I have carried 1,600 lbs in the bed of my 1994 dodge dakota with no problem, but I only drove 12 miles and at 45 miles an hour. These little trucks are tough and to top it mine is the V6!

The axels dont look very heavy duty i would not haul any more than the 1200 pound load cap or you may bend the trear axel tubes, best too haul a small heavy duty trailer, and save the truck- My 99 dakota extended cab will tow 3000 pound car on a dally no problem, though i just tow the slower roads no freeway driving.
I carried a payload of 1887#s with no problem. V6 also.
