Heater blows cold air
Asked by highlandpixie Feb 06, 2014 at 10:00 PM about the 1999 Dodge Dakota 4WD
Question type: Maintenance & Repair
I have a 99 Dakota Sport 3.8. In December
the heater started going out on it. I have full
air flow on all settings, (air, vent, defrost).
When it started in Dec, it would only blow
hot air on fan positions 1 & 2. Once it went
to 3 & 4 it might as well have been the ac
on. NOW it doesn't even want to blow hot
air at all. The very best I can get is barely
warm. Up until Dec, the heater worked fine.
It just quit working without warning. Is there
anything I can do?

Is fan blowing at all? If it is then feel the two hoses going to the heater core. If one is hot and the other is cold or Luke warm then your heater core is stopped up.

Hey Dan, yes my fans are blowing. On all powers, and from ac, thru vent, and the defrost as well. Everything works. Just not getting any hot air. l'll have to wait til the weekend when it warms up, but I'll definitely check those. If it is in fact the heater core, how do I fix that myself?

My 1990 has a control valve on the water line that feeds thru the firewall to the heater core. Check to see if it is opening; if not no hot water will enter the core
Good catch DakConvert. Highlandpixie Definitely check for that valve.

So much great information and many awesome things to try. Will definitely check all avenues, valve, thermostat, and hose. All of these probably need to be replaced or repaired seeing as how most everything under the hood is factory. I thank everyone and will keep all of y'all updated. Thanks again!
I had the same problem checked the hoses found out the coolant hadn't been replaced in a very long time. I flushed the system and now its blowing hot.
