It's been a long time but I did have a 389. I don't remember what you mean by points window, but take the spark plug out of #1...drivers side front. Get piston on TDC on compression stroke. You can tell compression stroke by sticking you finger on spark plug hole and feel for compression as piston comes up, with somebody turning the engine, take out all spark plugs and turn with a breaker bar on harmonic balancer. If you don't feel compression when piston is coming up it's on the exhaust stroke. Then when you know it's at TDC -8° the rotor will be (should be) pointing at #1

On a 389 looking from the top the rotor turns counter-clockwise, 1.8.4.3.6.5.7.2 and had the weights and springs centrifugal timing advance, forget even what the proper term for that is.
