2013 GMC Sierra "Service 4 wheel drive"

Asked by GuruDXN37Z Oct 14, 2024 at 06:10 PM about the 2013 GMC Sierra 1500 SLE Ext. Cab 4WD

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

I have a 2013 GMC Sierra 1500 SLE with the 4.8L and
the truck is in great condition. Every now and then,
more so in cooler weather (like 40°F and below), the
dash read out will state "Service 4 Wheel Drive" and put
the truck in "limp mode". This will only happen upon
start up and has never happened going down the road.
The selector knob still lights up and will switch the
truck into 4H and 4L and back to 2H. It's not throwing
any codes either. Most of the time you can disconnect
the battery and wait a few minutes and it will clear. But
today it doesn't want to reset. Any suggestions on
what it could be? I'd love to get it fixed finally.

My 2013 Silverado with a 5.3 did the same thing. I serviced it and front and rear differentials and nothing changed, everything worked but the service light stayed on, took it to my favorite independent shop and he checked it over and found the Transfer case shift motor's ohms were too high, replaced the motor assembly and bye bye light.
