Go to fastbackstack.com and you will find a wealth of information. In the 1960's they used an eleven digit VIN number. The first digit tells the year of the car. If your VIN starts out with a "5", that means it's a 1965 Mustang. Your title should also show the model year. You Do have a title?
Cannot find my 1965 Mustang vin number using car fax,is this good or bad

I don't think Car Fax has been around as long as your Mustang, but more recent data might be available if anything was reported to them. A lot of these classic cars don't have a lot of reportable data unless there was an accident or an insurance claim. So it's probably good to not show up in a Car Fax database.
The VIN on the drivers side fender should match your title. The first digit should e a 5 if its a 64 1/2 or 65
65 Mustage converting l6 to 289 will I need to change transmission as well? does someone sell bolt kits?

I was around back in those days and all I remember is the inline six came with a crumby two speed automatic. It was a dog. The 289 has twice the horsepower, with either a two or four barrel carburetor, and transmission options were a three or four speed standard. I would try to swap out both engine and transmission and get the whole deal. My Sister happened to be dating the Ford dealer's Son. When he would visit my Sister, I was out burning up the streets with the 289 Mustang, four speed he borrowed from his Dad. That thing was fast!
