1998 dodge dakota 4x4 front end binding in snow while braking

Asked by GuruP9DFK Jan 12, 2020 at 10:46 PM about the 1998 Dodge Dakota 4WD

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

Just took a recently bought 98 dakota out in some
snow, when I throw it in 4hi, and apply the brakes
relatively hard, it seems like the front end is binding
up, similar feeling to making a turn with 4x4 on on
dry pavement (yes I know this is a nono, that's why
I'm concerned.) I am driving in a straight line when
braking, and if I feather the brakes it's fine, only
when I press firmly does it do this binding, jerking
thing, and only in 4wd. Is this just abs working in
conjunction with the locked wheels? A traction
control thing? Seems really harsh on the truck,
again feels and sounds similar to a bind in 4x4
while turning, really jerky, so I have a hard time
believing it's just abs. My rotors and pads are fine,
seems like it only occurs in 4wd. Any input would
be appreciated thanks.

This might be the ABS. Get a second opinion from someone that understands how ABS works.
