What can make a 1998 Dodge Durango backfire?

Had a tune up recently. It did not start until we changed gas stations.My husband thinks it is just bad gas.

I would suspect bad fuel since you just changed stations. I only run chevron with techron in my vehicles. Try adding some fuel injector cleaner to your gas tank and top it off with good gas. I use either sea foam or CTC to clean my injectors. Using these will clean injectors and your valve seats. If it's a bad gas issue this should clear it up for you.
