Replace the fan if you feel it is the problem,,as long as water pump circulate,s proper in the radiator, and doe,s truck run cool when driving down the road?
migration_Durrango answered 10 years ago
Starting out it does but if driven for a extended period of time it tends to go towards hot then back towards normal reading so I really don't know what is needed
Are you sure it,s hot, doe,s it boil?
migration_Durrango answered 10 years ago
Yes it does boil! When I stop and park I can hear it boiling inside the radiator
Do you have to add water?
migration_Durrango answered 10 years ago
What is bad temp sending unit?
I know these question seem crazy, but they will help me help you.
It send,s signal to your temp, guage.
migration_Durrango answered 10 years ago
Yes a little after it runs hot because some of the water comes out from the overflow container
Have you checked for water at the tail pipe?
migration_Durrango answered 10 years ago
No I don't mind I just need some help cause I don't know much about it
migration_Durrango answered 10 years ago
No I haven't done that! What would that mean if it was?
Run car, get it warmed up,then check tail pipe for water, leaking out of it.
Means, you may have a small head gasket leak, making temp go up.If you are see water at the tail pipe.

Ok thanks! Judging by what I have told u already! What do u think it is?
Im leaning toward water pump.
migration_Durrango answered 10 years ago
Ok! So what should I be looking for to determine if it is indeed the water pump?
The fact of the matter is there is a head gasket problem with every Durango made from 2000 - 2006 and Dodge or their mechanic's will not tell you this, to preclude a massive recall due to factory defects. I took a 2002 Durango 5.9 liter V-8 4X4 that was overheating. I literally tore the entire cooling system out and off the vehicle. New Fan, New Clutch for fan, New Radiator, New Water Pump, All new Hoses, New heater hoses, New thermostat and a new sending unit for the heat gauge. Put all new Antifreeze in pressure checked everything and no leaks..............Everything was fine for about a week and then PRESTO it was over heating. What was left to check everything was brand new, the entire system...........The only left was a head gasket replacement which is very costly especially if you don't know how to do it yourself.........The head gasket is never bad enough that water gets in the oil and your tail pipe never steams........ So what's the remedy. Go to your local auto parts store such as AutoZone, Oreillys, Walmart or NAPA. Buy you a bottle of Bars COPPER stop leak. You will know you have the right one it is copper looking........... Let your engine cool down....Take off the radiator cap.....Start the engine.....Shake the bottle of copper stop leak and shake it vigorously.....then open it and slowly pour it into the system... Once done place the radiator cap back on the vehicle and let it run for 10 - 15 minutes........Then take it for a drive for 5 - 10 miles (not in town stop and go driving) but out on a highway or a rural area and just a nice steady speeding.....Go back home shut it off and your all done......This will fix the problem for you... Now in a severe case, you may have to put one more bottle of the copper stop leak in and due just as before....PRESTO no more over heating issues, heater works perfect, and yes if it's summer time run that air conditioner....I have done this to (6) different Durango's for people and they have had no more over heating issues...............One last thing, I have a 1996 Dodge Ram 1500 with the 5.9 engine in it. Has 238,000 miles on it, NO leaks of any kind, does not burn oil, and runs like the day I bought it, very strong. It is the same identical engine as in 1/2 the Durango's. Dodge went to a cheaper manufacture for head gaskets and now your the people paying for it......But DODGE WILL NEVER TELL YOU THAT !!!!!!!!!!!!
Do you pour the stop leak into the radiator tank? Or into the pressure hose with the pressure cap that goes from the engine to the radiator tank?
Don't use stop leak, it will mess up your cooling system. Get if fixed right.
My car is still running hot boiling hot
I'm having the same problems in my 4.7 2003 Durango, and I'm really leaning towards water pump or head gasket... Check and see if your water is circulating, if it's not circulating it very well could be the water pump.. at least I'm about to try the water pump, it is a cheaper fix than the head gasket, if that don't fix it I'm going to try Blue Devil coolant system and block leak fix...
I am having the same issue as David 0615 and my vehicle is a 2015. I have complained all the Chrysler in Michigan. I want them to payoff my truck and get me out of it!
I'm having this issue with my Durango 2004 5.7. Had the head gasket replaced, radiator, thermostat x2 and the water pump. Still running hot. any suggestions? Other then get a new one
I got a 2000 Dodge Dakota. It's giving me a code 1491. What can be the problem
Funny i had heads resurfaced new gaskets in my durango 3 weeks later its overheating. Water is circulating stays cool while the ac is on as soon as i turn off ac it gets hot
I have a 2004 Dodge Durango 5.7 Hemi just started overheating. We have replaced the thermostat the water pump hoses and still overheating not leaking from anywhere not overheating all the time. Randomly overheating. What should I check now
I've got a 2007 5.7 hemi durango it's overheating and from the tail pipe anyone know what I should do or what is wrong with it ??
Some of you guys may want to try and replace the fan clutch it's around $41.00-$45.00 depending on where you get it from.

Air in the cooling system is the biggest overheating issue with these motors! I have a 2005 Durango 4.7L which I just had the timing chain setup redone. NO cooling issues prior to draining the coolant for the repair. Getting the air out is a bitch! P.S. changed water pump, thermostat, and oil pump also! Park on a steep incline nose up, idle until well after thermostat opens, top off with coolant, repeat! eventually you will get the air all out, make sure the overflow tank always has fluid in it!
Had the same problem with air after changing the thermostat. After 30 min of idling with heater on, bubbles still coming up. Drove it for a bit and will pop the cap check the fluid level, let it idle for awhile and see if we are still getting bubbles. Not over heating so far.
Clogged cat.heat building up back into exhaust manifold.

My 2014 durango overheated at 99300 miles. It turned out to be the water pump..covered by warranty up to 100k miles..got lucky on this one. Asked the wife to make sure the dealer had done a proper bleed procedure..its her vehicle..long story short vehicle started overheating again but this time it was cycling between 209 and 238 degrees fahrenheit..normal at operating temp is 205f..it turned out to be lots of air in the cooling system. I bled system properly and now 250 miles later it runs like a champ. Time now to give the dealer a call and give them a piece of my mind.
Over heating can be caused by the auxiliary water pump not working.
I'm having issues with my 2001 Durango overheating changed thermostat I get about five miles and up to hot also trying to understand the 3way hose in top of the engine?
My 2004 dodge durango 5.7 hemi is overheating I have gotten The water pump changed thermostat, radiator flush bought a new radiator cap I lost now what else could it be? Any suggestions
If I have put a new radiator in and thermostat and water pump? Why is the hose getting hot running to my thermostat and making it overheat?
I have a 2004 Dodge Durango. Bought it used in 2014 with 85k miles on it. Drove it about a month and had overheating. It was losing coolant through the head gasket. Used the Blue Devil stuff. First drained coolant and filled with water. Added Blue Devil and ran until engine heated up. Bonded to the high heat area and sealed the leak. Completely drained the system again. Still running with no re-occuring issues 40k miles later. Since the product bonds to heat its important to follow instructions. Or it will bond where you need flow after the fact. I think its important to catch it early. I was hoping to get another year out of it. Now I just want to see how long it will go!

I haven't seen a reported similar issue to what I'm having in this thread yet. I replaced everything up to this point minus the temp sending unit. However, I have an 03' dodge Durango 5.9L while operating everything is fine stays at normal operating temp. When im at idle for a good while or on a really hot day it will slowly start to get beyond normal. Fan does not kick on unless I rev it also. Any thoughts?
