It could be a bad/weak radiator cap.
A good idea would be to get a cooling system pressure test performed on the car... Compression from the cylinders has the ability to push air into the cooling system, which can cause the expansion tank (overflow) to (literally) overflow... This is typically a sign of a blown head gasket. A pressure test shouldn't cost very much at a local garage. It's worth the money for the peace of mind.

This depends on if the engine is running when parked. It would also leak/push pressure in while driving. A radiator cap is a cheap test/solution (Cap $4-$10 parts store). A pressure test could be performed to check the cooling system to be sure on the head gasket theory. Some auto parts stores may do this service free. Usually so they can sell you parts. They may even be able to pressure test the old cap for you, before you purchase a new one.
Will a bad head gasket allow water to be pushed out, and not sucked into the cylinders?
