Buying a Car Out of State

Asked by Russell Dec 09, 2018 at 03:33 PM about the 2013 Honda Odyssey EX-L FWD

Question type: Shopping & Pricing

I live in New York state and my son is out in California.  We are interested in
my son acting as our agent in CA so we can buy a hopefully rust free car in
southern California which he would drive back to upstate NY.  My question is
how to handle the paper work.  If he buys and registers it in CA, we get to
pay CA sales tax and then pay NY sales tax when we transfer to our
ownership. Is there a way to register it here and send him the registration
and plates or to get a temporary registration he can use to transport the car
to here?  Thanks, Russell

If he registers it in California you will pay the CA sales tax. Are you sure you would also pay the NY sales tax? You might only pay to transfer the registration in NY. If he has a NY drivers license he could register it directly in NY and avoid the whole issue. You may be able to pay for it and have the dealer register it directly to NY and just have your son inspect it. Contact a car dealer and ask them. You should also talk to someone at a NY DMV office.
