According to http://www.cars.com/dodge/dakota/1997/standard-equipment/, the standard capacity was 15 gallons but there was an optional 22 gallon tank. Try refilling it at exactly a half-tank, it should take about 7-8 gallons for the 15 gal tank or 10-12 gallons for the 22 gal tank. Having said that, don't routinely go below 1/4 tank, because the fuel pump is at the bottom of the tank and relies on the fuel as a heat sink. If you run too near empty, the pump runs hot and it shortens the life.
