Since the I4 22RE was available stock in the 4Runner in 1989 is should work, but the problem my be in what the engine came out of, some other applications of that engine like the Celica, or Pickup, didn't have a gauge, only an idiot light, and the sending unit won't work on a gauge. After writing that only now I notice you replaced it, just make sure the sender is for a pressure gauge, not just a light
Thanks for the input. I ordered a brand new crate engine for the 4 runner. Probably a rookie question, but how can I tell the difference between a pressure gauge and a light sending unit? Thanks again!

http://www.yotatech.com/f115/doing-sr-5-gauge-cluster-swap-how-pictures-51800/ ...another part of same thread. What these guys are doing is an instrument cluster swap, to a cluster with a gauge, from one with a light only... not an engine swap... but it is exactly the same idea
