Asked by Adam Jun 02, 2022 at 06:50 PM about the 1987 Honda Prelude 2 Dr Si Coupe

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

My son just acquired a 1987 prelude. The guy he
got it from had just replaced the clutch, but now
5th is non existent and reverse is hard to get into.
Is this a clutch adjust issue or a new transmission
issue?
Any suggestions are much appreciated

I would say the transmission need to be rebuilt. I hope your son got the car for a good price. Find a local garages that work on transmissions and get estimates. I'd stay away from chain shops.

Could it be something as simple as the clutch not being lined up properly? I'm just trying to figure out a way to save my kid some my money, but if it has to be do e then so be it

You didn't test drive it ? In a car that old one thing after another will go wrong , bad investment

Lol my kid loves these stupid old Hondas. He traded an 86 accord hatchback for it. Anyway I am just trying to help him out. Yes he test drove it but never got it fast enough to need 5th gear(this is why I normally go with them just not this time) I told him it would wind up costing him more than the car is worth but whatever he will learn from his mistakes I guess
